I dunno. I just read about them in the Free Press. I went to see them a few times in Hart Plaza. One time i was shot at, another time someone pulled a gun and the whole crowd panicked and just about trampled me. |

Setting the sarcastic comments aside for a moment, has anyone gone down to the fireworks on a boat lately? last time I went (about 10yrs ago) to the fireworks by boat it was quite scary...people were absolutely nuts. However, I've heard that the Coast Guard has settled things down. Anyway, just curious if anyone had any recent Detroit river experiences/tips. It appears that the weather may not cooperate anyway, but thought I'd ask. |

It will probably be blocked off. Everything from Jefferson down to the river is blocked off down here (by River Place), but you can still get though if you come in further east. (Message edited by Islandman on June 28, 2006) |

Well, I guess that answers that question, they did have the fireworks. I haven't been down there for the fireworks since those 'twins' did their deed (not because of that but that's the last time I was there) but I can usually hear the fireworks from my home. Especially the finale. Drives the dog nutz. Couldn't hear them this time.. Niether could he. Was it a weak display? |

question: did they have pedestrian traffic blocked going south to hart plaza, as they did last year? last year they had foot traffic restricted at congress/larned, and a lot of folks had their line-of-sight blocked by buildings, power lines, signs, and traffic signals. |

I was at WSU on parking structure 2 and had an awesome view of the fireworks with the skyline (didn’t get to see some of the smaller lower fireworks but still nice). It was free parking and cheaper food than down at Hart Plaza. All in all good time. Best part is that I beat all the traffic home left WSU and got home in 10 minutes. |

Carl, Woodward was closed to cars, at least from Larned to Jefferson which is where I was. People were sitting in the island around the UF torch and standing and walking on Woodward. It was a great spot to see and hear the show. It was not jammed solid with viewers. There was plenty of room for folks to walk around. |

last year, there were a limited amount of people allowed into the hart plaza area, and when the quota was reached, no movement at all was allowed south of larned. it was a surprise, and aggravation, to many folks, to encounter barricades north of jefferson. people who were accustomed to a front-row view, year-after-year, were instantly desirous of being at home and watching the show on tv, rather than watching the show with wires, trees, signs, traffic signals, and buildings in the way. i figured last year, the show would be cut down if the folks sponsoring it realized how many folks would come downtown, and not be able to see it. |

20 minutes of fireworks is good enough, you get bored after a while, seeing the same things. It was a great show, I was on woodward on one of the island right by the Chase building. I had a great view. |

20-25 minutes is all they ever are. This was the first time in seven years, I didn't work fireworks night, I usually missed 1/2 the show cleaning the bar and washing glasses with an occasional glance at the TV and aquick walk out to the Beaubien median to catch the finale. In some ways I find it amusing, all of the hype and the disruption of Downtown for a 20 minute show, but I haven't missed it for 16 years now. But, except for one year I've attended private parties where I could wait out the masses and observe the crowds with a beer in hand and sail the empty streets after the mass exodus. Part of the rewards of being a Downtown denizen. |

Well, yet again, I didn't go downtown for the fireworks (even though I work there and has passes to a prime viewing area). I'm just not willing to bet on the security of my 8-year-old nephew against the melee that took place at Woodward and Congress last year. I'll leave all that shit for bragging rights in the next rap video. Holla! (and all that). Anyhoo, the coverage on Channel 4 sucked. Crappy, focus-grouped music drowning out the booms of the fireworks. At least until some tech at WDIV got a clue and dialed back the Muzack a bit (in the last few minutes). What were they thinking, anyway? We don't want to hear the caterwaulings of alleged "artists" - we want to hear the effects of what everyone showed up for - the fireworks. Yawn. If I were Target, I'd ask for a refund. It was a non-event. |

Negative. I've only missed a couple of the shows for as long as I can remember and they have always lasted for an average of 40 - 45 minutes. It's not a huge deal to me since I attend for the party atmosphere more than anything else but I know some people I was with were disappointed. |

I watched from the roof of 1660 Clay (RIC). At around 9:30 we walked around the ren cen to the East Side, from there we walked down to the Riverwalk, which had just the right amount of people. Not shoulder to shoulder packed, but definately busy. Lots of folks taking advantage of it. Now that we've got more space on the River hopefully Hart Plaza won't be the crowded mess its been in years past. |

Now that I live in a spot where I can walk out my door and watch the fireworks, I get invited to parties where the view is even better....I watched from Riverfront Towers, where you could see the barges..I returned home to find that the people who had set up camp on the vacant lots next to my home had departed, taking every soda can and scrap of paper with them. I guess that this year was a flawless party. |

They've had the background music for as long as I can remember. For me it's kind of like a tradition in the same way they do the whole "Coast Guard, ready. Barge 1, ready. Bridge, ready." thing in the beginning. |

The quality and length this year were noticeably lower than any other year I can remember. The finale, especially, had a less-than-impressive impression. I had a couple people in tow who had never witnessed the Detroit fireworks, and they asked "is that really it?" after the finale. Wazooty, I took a bunch of shots from MapDetroit's HQ at the top of Buhl. I can send you one, where do you want it? |

The length of the show does seem to get shorter each year. This year they started at 10:09 PM (three minutes late) and ended at 10:36 PM. If Target (or whoever sponsors them in the future) can't afford a longer show they should only use two barges. That would add about 13 minutes. |

I didn't attend the fireworks this year. But I had to dash over from St. Clair Shores over to Dearborn around 10:10 PM. As I was going westboud on I-94 there was an SUV going about 80MPH. "What was his hurry"... I was thinking?. And when I got to the Dequindre Yards I-94 bridge just before the I-75 interchange, I saw that guy parked over on the right side of I-94 at the top of the bridge. He was watching the fireworks from there. I looked over towards downtown and saw how amazing the fireworks looked from that high perch. And when they were over, all you had to do was take the Woodward exit and make a U turn and get back to the east side before the heavy homeward traffic starts. This had to be one of the best places to watch the fireworks, and without the traffic hassle! And no need to worry about the police, they were all busy with traffic/crowd control downtown. |

The GM Promenade was a great place to watch the show. Kids loved the fountain with the jets sometimes catching them and adults off guard. The steps/ledge area of the Promenade was reserved as a private event. The RiverWalk right in front of the Promenade was a great place to watch from. My big mistake was parking at the RiverEast garage. One hour and ten minutes to get my car out of the garage. Bummer, though people generally dealt with the gridlock reasonable well. |

Watched it from the Riverfront Towers. We walked back home down woodward at 11:30 and it seemed like the whole city emptied out. Nobody was around except cops and clean up crews. An hour before a million people had been there. I think that they should put some Beer Tents or live music on the river to keep the crowd around and in local businesses. We could hear live music and see big crowds on the Windsor side. But the Detroit side was dead. |

Here is a link to a handful of shots. Quality is not there because I have a digital camera from 2001. Yeah, rocking the 1.3 Megapixel. http://smg.photobucket.com/alb ums/v451/adamjab19/Fireworks20 06/?action=view&slideshow=true |

Adamjab, I live at Cathedral Tower also. Is there a lot of people fighting over window views during the fireworks? I went over to Canada like I've done the last 3 years and had a really easy time getting back. It only took like 15 minutes from parking through customs on the Detroit side. I will post a link to my photos when I put them online. |

Thecarl, That melee was actually two years ago, after that guy shot up the crowd. The Detroit News was the only agency to cover it, they estimated between 200-300 people in a mini-riot at the corner of Larned and Woodward. That WAS two years ago, wasn't it?! Seems like an eternity... |

thanks, gannon...i was a bit confused, initially...i thought it might have been a reference to two years back, but i had to ask. interestingly, i was caught up in a big riot once in the "millender tunnel," circa 1991. no press. detroit fireworks were still poised for national prominence. city leaders obviously did nothing to address a boiling-over of tensions in the city. anyway - did this story get buried, or what?
quote:Man Recovers from Post-Fireworks Shooting By Michael Rosenfield Web produced by Sarah Morgan June 30, 2006 A young man was recovering, Friday, after being shot in Lafayette Park shortly after the Freedom Festival Fireworks. Around 11:45, 20-year-old Bobby Griffin was walking with a group of friends through Lafayette Park to get back to their car. A verbal exchange with a group of men quickly led to a fight. As they tried to run, someone opened fire, shooting Griffin in the stomach. Griffin’s friend, who was pistol-whipped during the fight, said, "He’s really messed up. We can’t even go out and have a good time without somebody getting shot or somebody getting hurt. I can’t believe it was me and my friends this time." He said 5 men are responsible and believes it was a random attack by people looking for a fight. "We need a witness to come from somewhere and give us some type of information, so we can catch this guy because he shouldn’t be out on the streets. He could shoot somebody else," said the friend, who didn’t want to be identified. Griffin’s grandmother, Paula Griffin, said, "I didn’t think I was going to make it the night that it happened. I’ve already lost one child to the city of Detroit. He’s doing better. He did get up today and he did walk a little bit today." Police stress the shooting occurred over an hour after the fireworks and quite a distance away. If you have any information call the Detroit Police Department.

Rocket_city- My friend lives in a 17th floor studio facing downtown. So I didn't have to fight with anyone but him! |
