Having been in the Wurlitzer numerous times since the early 80's, I've wondered when they left. There is (was)evidence of an organ demo room on 3 and a recording studio further up, a photographer's studio on 4 with a makeshift shower. I'm aware that the Theosophical Society had the 13th. Anyone else have memories of the building and/or when Wurlitzer moved out? |

That building was used by Wurlitzer until sometime in the mid 70's. Wurlitzer had demonstrator pipe organs in that building in the 20's and early 30's. The organ that was in the Punch n' Judy theatre (Grosse Pointe) was originally a demonstrator in the downtown store. Wurlitzer collapsed in the early 80's, and their corporate HQ in DeKalb, IL was sold off, as were the name--especially in the Jukebox line |

Besides money, what are other obstacles preventing the Wurlitzer Building from being converted into lofts? |

what they need to do is build an addition into the corner lot and double the width of the floorplate. |

Parking? That seems to be one of the holdups for the Metropolitan next door. There was a report a year or more ago that the owner wanted 2 million to sell the building. |

those aren't so bad. main reason = opportunist/speculator owner (bought for $200k, was last on market for $1.4 mil.). |

A 14-story building seems quite large to be just a showcase for juke boxes and organs, etc. Did Wurlitzer occupy all floors? (I realize organs can take up a lot of floor space.) Rayraydetroit mentioned a photography studio somewhere upstairs in the first post. It makes me wonder if Wurlitzer had buildings like this in other large cities of the 1920s.
