With news of the Rangers and Islanders possibly playing a game at Yankee Stadium next fall, what about a Wings game at Ford Feild; possibly a good old fashion Wings/Leafs game? This could be used to showcase Ford as a possible spot for the frozen 4 |

This open air hockey has been done before. MSU - UM played @ Spartan Stadium in front of the largest crowd to see a hockey game (70,000+) some years back, it was called the "Cold War". All that hype and the game ended in a tie(http://msuspartans.cstv.com/sp orts/m-hockey/spec-rel/061701a aa.html). And Ford Field has already gotten the Frozen Four in 2010(http://www.modeldmedia.com/int henews/frozenfour.aspx). |

They did open air hockey in Canada a few years back too, and something like 40k came out in below zero temps haha. |

How about playing a game on the river just off Belle Isle. That would be REAL open air hockey! |

If I'm not mistaken, the Frozen four is already scheduled for Ford Field. Ask Jelk. I think he went to the press conference about it. |

Russian hockey fans sneer at Amerikanski hockey fans who watch game indoors. Who needs kompressors to make ice for rink? Only need some antifreeze for the belly - "Na zdorovie!" Steadfast Arkhangel'sk fans in -30 degree temperatures watch the hockey mayhem on the ice during the "Championship of Peace" tournament between Sweden and Russia. February 1999. Ice hockey tournament match between Russia and Sweden. Russia won with goal scored on a penalty shot. February 1999.

Yes, the 2011 Frozen 4 is at Ford Field. The configuration will have the ice square to the football field at at 50 yard line. The NHL has a strict policy about the location of games, as they do not want it to be a source for mockery, like some events can sometimes become. But the State of Michigan has hosted many uniqe sporting events--MSU in particular. A Wings/Leafs game would probably not sell out, considering the game would have no conference implications and not have a chance to set an attendance record. The Cold War at MSU was unique because it was a rivalry game with implications. It set a world record for attendance, which Ford Field would not be capable of. |

I noticed the size of that net, too. I also tried counting the jerseys on the ice and it appears that tournament was more like "soccer on ice". Maybe it was just a midget ice hockey tournament and the photo was taken during a line change ;-) Here are the photos in their original context (scroll all the way down). Sorry for the thread hijacking............ |

Having attended both the MSU vs. UM "Cold War" and the UW vs. OSU "Frozen Tundra Classic" I can say that the Cold War was by far the better event. Events like this are no fun if the stadium is only 1/2 full. If hockey is to be played at Ford Field it should only be done if the event will be sold out. The Frozen 4 will probably do this, and I think only a Stanley Cup playoff game would do it for the Wings. |
