It's not just Detroit that has $6,000 houses in neighborhoods like Brightmoor and the Eastside. Canton, OH is seeing a big real estate crash like Detroit of decades past:

Wow, my mom lived in Canton for about 3 or 4 years when she was a kid back in the early 1950s. Her descriptions of it make it sound very working class, definitely not a cute, comfy suburb.

I read that article in last weekends NYT. You couldn't help but see the similarities between Canton & Detroit or maybe Flint is a better parallel.
At least in Canton some of the people are working to stave off the blight that happened here in what seemed like overnight.

Interesting. Eventhough we live in Toronto, my dad keeps telling me that we should buy a house in Detroit for investment. However I don't think there are many houses you can get for under $10,000 anymore. Is that true?

I know many cities have cheap houses. Its not just Detroit or Canton. Pittsburgh has many homes up for sale by the city, for as cheap as $2,000.

In Canada, Winnipeg is the posterchild of cheap housing. You can get a house 2min from downtown Winnipeg, for like $10,000.

Northeast Ohio has some charming places, but Canton is kinda dull.
I'm sure that you can get a cheap house in Wapakeneta too.
Then there's Nelsonville, where many of our old street paving blocks came from.
