(Or a pennant "chase," for that matter, either.)

There simply ARE no more pennant races.

There hasn't been a pennant race since 1968. (And we know who won the American League flag that year. Wasn't much of a race, though.)

Now 1967 ... man ... THAT was a pennant chase!

But when both leagues were split into two divisions in 1969, pennant races ceased to exist.

The Tigers are in the hunt for the playoffs this year.

Period.

They'll have to win two rounds of playoffs to win the pennant. And therein lies the difference.

The playoffs determine who wins the pennant.
(NOT the regular season anymore.)

So why do reporters continue to use the term "pennant race"? There's no such thing anymore.

It's a figure of speech, like calling someone a douchebag.

lmao @ lurker, i was thinking of a way to say that without really saying it but you nailed it on the head.

Anyway, yes the tigers are in a sort of pennant race because they are trying to get to the playoffs. to win the pennant and ultimatly the world series.

It seems to me that making the playoffs is kind of like winning the first leg of the pennant race. I mean technically there was never any race. The most accurate way to describe the so-called pennant race (in 1902, 1967, 1993, or now)is as a pennant competition. What can you do?

Baseball just ain't as good it was back in the day. When I played, we didn't even have real bats, balls, or mitts. You caught the ball with your bare hand, but that was alright because the ball was an old sturdy sock.

Man those were the days...

O.K., it looks like we're done, here. Now, can we think of some other absolutely trivial matter to argue about?

Harpernottingham, I'm sure you and your buddies Riley and Dow still believe that major league baseball will be played at the corner again, too. I really detest the saying, but some people need to get a life. You ain't 21 anymore, you are "that guy" when you go to the club and Bob Seger is losing his voice due to too many Marlboros. Wake up, it's 2006!

Semantics aside, the Tigers are in the hunt for a post season playoff berth for the first time in recent memory. That in itself is reason to rejoice.
It is fun to see the other teams screw up for a change and have us take advantage of them.
Nothing like a winner.

If you look at the sequence of games played against other teams as race to win more games than their competitor as race, then wouldn't the playoffs and regular season combined equal out to a pennant race? Therefore there are still pennant races, and you would appear to be a bitter individual attemtping to create some sense of superiority. Just a thought.
