Do you notice a difference in how clean downtown is? Have the Clean Detroit crews made downtown so sanitized and sparkling that you could eat off the streets?

Are they going to clean the Book tower? That would be awesome.

They are hoping to expand the cleaning to include all of downtown bounded by the freeways... They have also been working extra shifts on the weekends too... Its really making a difference. I tipped a couple of the guys that were working at 11pm after a Tiger's game, and they said that they were receiving lots of positive feedback from everyone downtown. Impressive job.

I was going to send a memo out to Mr. Penske to see if he could get God to cut down on the wind some...

...it seems that these breezes do a stellar job tranporting plastic grocery bags all over the town.

This is apparently against the bag's wishes, since they impale themselves on any nearby razor wire fencing as soon as possible.

Walking behind the Fire Department's Maintenance warehouse on the north end of Eastern Market this morning, I noticed how filthy their southeast fenced lot has become. It is slowly becoming a junkyard of crashed and retired smaller department vehicles, and looks worse every week.

Luckily, this is the side where the majority of people can see as they come in to shop at the market.

At the very least, can they score a few of those fence wraps that appeared all over downtown before the SuperBowl?!

The cleaning is great, but they should arm the crews to replace bad sidewalks and streets and plant trees.

Cleaning is great. But we need to begin educating our citizens to keep the city clean. Often, I'll wake up on monday to see the park in front of my apartment littered with trash. It had just been cleaned less than two days before.

Sad.

Based upon my research on other cities' forums on urbanplanet, I've concluded that Americans as a whole are too stupid to use a trash can.

It really isn't about education or level of intelligence, people who litter just don't care. For them, it's all about me! me! me! They don't understand that the planet is something which they have to respect and share with other people and animals.

Makes me wonder what happened to all of those green plastic garbage cans that came about when Kwame was first elected. Those have decreased in numbers considerably.

You can't fault litterers too much when the City literally gives you no where to throw out your stuff if you're walking down the street. I know many businesses provide trash cans outside, but many do not as well.

a majority of that litter comes from car owners and drivers who don't want the crap in the car after they are done with it.

Well, of course there aren't hany hard facts on who leaves the trash, but it seems to me that Street People are a huge part of the problem. And of course there is the obvious "flyer" problem on weekends.

Let me from downtown to neighborhoods for a moment.

This might sound stupid to some of you but I really think Detroit could offer $10.00 jobs w/o benefits to people and Detroiters would keep neighborhoods and parks clean.

Let's say each person works 5 hrs per day x 5 days = $250.00 week. I know it's not much but it gives people a little money in their pocket for food, rent, etc.

As for health benefits, the employees could go to any public health care center nearby (put 1 FQHC in every part of the city for a total of 5) for quality health services at very little cost.

As for monitoring the workers, put a responsible group in charge for oversight, i.e. - GCDC, WJBA, Motor City Blight Busters, SDBA, DARE, etc.

Okay, so here's my bright idea. The city hires 5,000 workers (1,000 per area) at $10.00 for 5 hours per day for 5 days a week x 4 weeks per month x 12 months per year = $60,000,000.00.

This amount equates to almost of the city's CDBG funding and accomplishes several things. 1st, people are working and making a little change. Give them a uniform and some pay and workers feel a sense of purpose and pride in their community. 2nd, the neighborhoods/parks get cleaned up and stays clean. Any special circumstances are indentified immediately and reported immediately for city officials to act on. 3rd, the fed's see physical improvements with the money being spent. This is a major issue with the fed's and BDBG funding. 4th, credible community non-profits monitor the workers. This ensures people don't take advantage of the opportunity.

Call me crazy but this idea actually works.

How about holding on to your trash until you can find a proper place to put it? That's what I do.
I have a 4 year old who has enough sense not to throw things outside on the ground. He gets the most hurt look on his face when he sees discarded food containers on the ground when we're walking around.

One day he just said, "That's DISGUSTING!"

I couldn't agree more.

Litter is a metro area problem. Try walking through downtown Royal Oak on a Sunday morning. Ankle deep trash.

A friend of mine calls the plastic garbage bags Freeway Ghosts.

Soul, I don't disagree with you at all, but there are tons of people out there who were not brought up with this sort of mentality. They will throw the crap on the streets if there is no garbage can (heck many won't even use the can!).

As far as car drivers littering, that is a matter of police enforcement. Get the word out that the cops will write you up for that and citation you, and the problem will decrease. Its no where near that bad in places where they are not shy about pulling folks over for throwing a cigarette out the window.

There is an expensive tool called a "bag snagger" that was developed by some bright man who is annoyed by all the plastic bags in trees. There is a web site. I understand that spring is the best time for bag snagging: higher visibility and, of course, more bags flying around because of higher winds.

Downtown, or the part of it that I typically see, looks great! MCM, when I read your post I thought it was something Danny C would do, but looked over and realized it was you.
