Let's see if the forumers can add some weight to this. Voting goes only until 6PM tonight.

Verlander is still in 4th place for the last all star position...but all it takes is votes from us to get him on the team.

Like in Chicago, you can vote and vote often.

Nobody (relative term, but I'm emphasizing that the Tigers' bandwagon still isn't that large) gives a shit around here, even with the best team in baseball. We have the largest city and largest metropolitan area out of all the candidates, thus you'd think we'd have the largest fanbase to mobilize. But we're too apathetic...alright enough typing, back to voting.

I tossed in my fair share and I'm sure everyone else in here did as well. Well, no dice... Ozzie Guillen gets another one of his boys voted onto the team.

It might be better in the long run though. I'm not sure if Verlander's ever pitched this kind of schedule so it might be good for him to rest up for a few days during the break.

The all-star selection process is a joke.
I'd still let the fans vote for the starters, but let the managers select the rest of the players and get rid of the concept that every team has to have a represenitive. Former Tiger Mark Redman is on the all-star team? This guy couldn't even crack the Tigers rotation.

One solution would be to still require every team have one representative but expand the roster so that that representative isn't necessarily picked by position to fill a roster spot. Also this expanded roster allows the occasional inclusion of players in positions that happen to be topheavy with talent in a given year (e.g. this year 1b in the NL and C (and starting P) in the AL). Someone will always get slighted every year but it shouldn't be a Cy Young contenter or a perrenial allstar hitting 360.

I like having every team represented. If you think it stinks having the AL allstar team seemingly be ~1/2 Yankees and Red Sox every year that would only get worse if you eliminated the slots for the worst teams.

Rjk, looking at the voting process as is, the fan participation aspect -- although very popular -- is what makes the process less credible. Allowing the fans to choose the starters makes the all star game more of a popularity contest than an all star game. Baseball, being the ultimate game of statistics, could develop a computer program to select rosters for the game if it so choose.

Fan participation and team representation continue to be the hallmarks of the mid season classic. This is probably for the best. However, do not knock the fact that all teams need to be represented when teams with large fan bases can dominate the starting line ups.

I am sure Tigers fans enjoyed having a player at the game in 2003.

I gotta admit, the "Punch A.J." campaign was quite clever.

And deciding who has the home field advantage for the World Series in this, an EXHIBITION game just doesn't make sense. In essence, the home field advantage won't be decided by the best of either league (they'll already have played early on and left) if it stays tight later on.

This has got to be the worst idea ever for the All Star game- and it's just a knee jerk reaction to that one game where it ended in a tie too.
