OK Tiger Fans, we all know Kaline, Kell, Cobb, Trammel, Gibson, Horton and the other big names.

Let's see how many obscure Tigers we can name. Here are some of my favorites from the fifties.

Coot Veal
Johnny Groth
Charley "Paw Paw" Maxwell
Reno Bertoia
Milt Bolling (Frank Bolling's brother)
Bill Tuttle
Neil Christy
Don Mossi (His ears made him look like a 58 Ford Galaxie with the doors open.)
Paul Foytack
Phil Reagan
Ozzie Virgil, (Tigers' first black player)

Remember when the Tigers and Indians traded Managers, Joe Gordon for Jimmy Dykes?

Remember the big trade, Harvey Kuehn for Rocky Colavito?

Remember the way Colavito would stretch with the bat behind his back? Every kid in Detroit soon followed suit.

Chuck Dressen. Should have managed the 1968 but died of a heart attact during the 1966 season. One of his stars with those great Brooklyn Dodgers teams of the early 1950's Gil Hodges also died too young of a heart attack just before the begining of the 1972 season...at the time Hodges was managing the New York Mets.

Run a list like this and you left off Hank Aguirre, possibly one of the worst hitting pitchers of all time? Don Mossi on the other hand could hit to the point that he would be used as a pinch hitter from time to time.

Loved Charlie Maxwell (The Sunday Slugger) as a kid. We had something in common, we were (are?) both left handed. I believe he once held the American League record for games played in left field without an error.

Chuck Dressen left the team after his second heart attack in May of 1966 and was replaced by Bob Swift (Bob Cain's catcher when Eddie Gaedel batted for The Browns in 1951), but Swift took ill with what turned out to be lung cancer and had to be replaced in July. Dressen died on 8/10/66, Swift on 10/17/66.

You need a catcher. How bout Red Wilson?

How about Virgil "Fire" Trucks? He went 5-19 during the Tigers' 104-loss season in 1952, but managed to make two of those wins no-hitters.

Mark "the Bird" Fidrych?? I'm not old enough to remember anything in the 60s or early 70s. Gramma n Gramps took me to games all the time and the one that stands out the most is The Bird.
Although I remember them arguing about Wockenfuss all the time.....good arguing. Pulling up in their drive, they'd have the game on the radio.....THAT I remember.

Ray Boone was one of my favorites. I have his autograph on the back of a 1954 Michigan Bell bill that was the only paper my dad had on him when we saw Boone in Hudsons downtown. He was also the father of Bob Boone and grandfather of Aaron Boone.

I bought my condo off of Roy Columbine's grandson. He had a ton of stuff from the 30's and 40's that was left to him, including an official 30's era Tiger Jacket that was sweet as all hell. I heard the name, but really didn't have a clue who he was except for the occasional mention by Kaline or Kell. Dad straightened me out though.

Harry Heilmann was actually a player for the Tigers, in fact as a youth I used to go swimming at Heilmann's playfield at 7 mile between Hayes and Kelly. Also played little league foe Wisheagan-Heilmann Athletic Club...but again I digress...
Favorite Tigers... have to agree about Jim Walewander because his favorite band was The Dead Milkmen....anyone mention Frank Tannana.. proud product of Dertoit Catholic Central back when they were still acctualy located in Detroit.

It was Turn Back The Clock day in Seattle today. The M's were in Seattle Pilots uniforms and the Tigers in grey 1969 road unis. Old English block D on the cap, and "Detroit" in block letters on the jersey. Much better than the script they're using now. M's won, 3-2. So here I am rooting for a team 3 games under .500, 2 and a half out of first in the AL West.....

George Vico--first base. Only played one season for the Tigers. Hit a HR his first time at bat. Could do "the splits" reaching for the ball to get a runner out at first.
His mitt was "the trapper"- I still own one.Still as good as new.

Does anyone remember "Cobb's Lake" the place where he had the groundscrew soke the infield? Also gotta love how the Georgia Peach would sharpen his Steel Cleetes and use them to spike the 2nd basemen's face while he stole 2nd.
Unfortunatly as a little leaguer I tried to immitate this with my rubber cleetes and it got me ejected from the game. When I was old enough to realise the kind of person Tyrus Ramond Cobb was, I was ashamed of how he was as a pearson. Still I always refer to him as the "Greatest Baseball player of all times until 1990.

Isn't it great to have the Tigers involved in a pennant race?

The Tigers' Song from 1968

We're all behind our baseball team
Go get 'em Tigers!
World Series bound and picking up steam,
Go get 'em Tigers!
There'll be joy in Tigertown,
You wait and see,
When the Tigers bring the pennant back
where it oughtta be,
We're all behind our baseball team,
Go get 'em, Detroit Tigers
Go get'em Tigers!

Purnel Goldy was a spring training phenom in the early 60's who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag once the real season started. He only lasted part of the '62 and '63 seasons but he was a flash across the sky down in Lakeland.

I can only remember the 70's Tigers:
Danny Meyer
Jason Thompson
Auriolo Lopez (can't spell the first name)
Lance Parrish
Rusty Staub
Dave Rozema

I switched to being a fair-weather Detroit sports fan after being traumatized with their losing/medicore ways during that time period when I was growing up.

Speaking of 3rd Base, anyone remember Darnell Coles throwing the ball out of the stadium in anger?

Rico Brogna had high expectations as did Darnall Coles - but I think it was Chris Pittaro (as someone posted who was to be Mickey Mantle Jr)

Paul Gibson, late 80's reliever with Harry Carey glasses, looked like the biggest dork.

Kirk Gibson was the next Mickey Mantle. Carl Willis was the next Rollie Finger and if you didn't like Torey Louvello, "then you don't like ice cream."

Remember when Al Cowens charged the mound going after pitcher Ed Farmer ? The guy who had broken his jaw with a pitch, causing him to have his mouth wired shut for like 4 months, only able to drink out of a straw.

Can't forget that great pitching duo from 1964 (I think) -- Ron Nischwitz and Howie Koplitz.

Charley Maxwell was also called a "ladies man". Women loved him.

Steve Kemp was traded to the CWS for Chet Lemon just after the 1981 season ended. Lemon played for the Tigers until the 1990 season.

Kemp and Jason Thompson were supposed to be the Tigers' big 1-2 punch. It never worked out.

I love ALL Detroit teams. Born '46. Left in '71. Can't go back before...eh...mid 50's as far as history/recollection/location except for what I read on Detroit Yes. Very positive web site! We all know that. ANY DISCUSSION/ANYTIME/ANY THREAD, I would like to applaud many times over all these current sites many times over. As I mentioned I can only relate to CHANGES in ALL threads since the mid-50's. The creator's of this site, "what ever thead" need to be applauded.
