Since the topic of preservation comes up so much here, what threads do you think should be preserved in the Detroit Memories Forum once they run their course [including those in the archives].

Detroit Memories is sort of a hall of fame - maybe its name will be changed to that. For example, and obviously, Old Car Factories is destined for the hall.

Toss out your suggestions for threads that you find are of quality and have enlightened and or entertained you.

No guarantee that all will be graduated but your suggestions will be valued.

Detroit Streetcar Memories (DSR) thread
Detroit's Moviehouses (Theatres?, or whatever that 3 pager was called) thread

I've looked for it a few times, anything but that thread shows up on searches. Plus I'd like to be able to add that thread in the future.

Maybe the Waterworks Park thread, the Detroit Expressway Planning circa 1945 thread, and the usual suspects: OCF, D2TT.

Maybe the Continental Plant on Jefferson thread should be added to the OCF index as it was the thread that begot the behemoth. I blame Mackinaw for starting it all.

It's probably wrong to suggest this thread, because I started it, but it always one of my favorites. And the mystery never got solved: https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/36206/44026.html

Can't remember what it was called, but I enjoyed the thread where we went through all the local radio and tv jingles from the past. I think newcomers would like reading that.

Photos du jure by Andrew in Windsor AKA AIW. They are always good, and always very educational.
This guy knows more about Detroit, Michigan than da Mare, eh.

BTW, Billy Strayhorn wrote a song made famous by Duke Ellington, during their Canada period,
"Take The Train, EH".

What ever happened to the thread with the pictures of a family and children in front of an apartment buiding along with other pics of the area and buildings in that location ...there was a gas station and other recognizable buildings. It was I beleive late 30's and the pics were of someones relatives. I'm curious to see if the location was ever solved. I know Jaba work hard on that case but i'm not sure of the outcome.

My pics are the ones where someone posts a pic of their relative's childhood home from the 1940s or earlier and the folks on this board, especially MikeM, pull out the maps and their knowledge of neighborhood architecture, local stores, etc. and crack the case. That has never ceased to amaze me. I don't know that the board has failed at figuring out a pic yet.

Another one just came to mind:

There was a thread a few years ago where folks discussed Grand River near the Sfld, Greenfield, Lahser area. We discussed Rosedale Park, Grandmont, Old Redford, Grand/Green, etc. There were several old pics posted, buildings identified, etc. Rutic, myself and a few others were heavily involved. I can't seem to find it when I search the archives. That is what really got me hooked and sold on DetroitYES.

Lowell, I second BOTH of BVos' suggestions.

Re the GR fenkell threads, there were a few in 2004 ... IMO THIS one is the best (from July 2004):
Grand River /Fenkell / Greenfield Pics
https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/23585/24296.html
It starts off with a little too much of me blathering on like an idiot savant but after that really hits it's stride and then meanders off into other interesting territory. Great thread on IMO one of the most important parts of residential Detroit for the last 50 years.

Antoher one on the same topic is Feb 2004's
Grand River/Fenkell Shopping
https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/18968/19996.html?1077427 547
but imo it isn't nearly as good as the first one I mentioned.

Also BEFORE all of this (maybe ~2002) there was a great thread about GR Greenfield shopping. It disappeared in a server crash and no longer appears to be archived, but it was AIR a terrific thread. Perhaps Mr Lowell can use his necromancy skills to bring it back ...

Mr. Lowell, here is another suggestion. Now it is probably waaay too political on too hot of a topic to want to draw attention to, but it is a terrific example of the best sorta conversations we have on this forum on hotbutton topics. From Jan 2004: Brush Park
https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/18968/19686.html

A whole lotta Detroit in that thread.

Thanks to Rustic for finding that thread from Grand River. You've got to teach me some day how to get the search results that you do. I can never find what I'm looking for using the search function.

And thanks to Lowell for adding it to the Hall. Now I don't have to wonder what happened to it anymore.

Thanks also for adding the War with Livonia. That has to take the top prize of all time in the humor category!

If you look through many of these posts, there is one name that comes up over and over again, Mikem. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the guy is the Most Valuable Poster on the board. He should work at the Burton Collection if he doesn't already.

Lowell, good choices. One more suggestion but it does NOT show up in the forum archives. There was a thread about Grayhaven and the Gar Wood Mansion where =sc=, rasputin(?), citylover(?), and a few others (sailorrick and jams too maybe?) shared some inside dope on carousing there PRIOR to and durring the bikers trashing the place. These recollections were interspersed with other choice historical and anecdotal tidbits. NOTE it is NOT any of the later threads that popup occasionally on the subject. =sc= in particular was in rare form. there is a refernce to the thread by mike m in this thread

calling it " SC's Gar Wood History"
https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/7836/8406.html#POST90951

but the link doesn't work. IF you could find this thread in the ether it is absolutely HOF material.

Thanks Hornwrecker for the link to the old Theatre thread. I just read thru the entire thread again.... great pics and fond memories....

PSIP.... if you read this.... I finally came across the name of the famous organist who did a concert at the Fox Theatre in 1985. It was GAYLORD CARTER, who was the personal favorite organist for Harold Lloyd and Mary Pickford. He was organist for many Los Angeles movie palaces in the 1920's. He was born in 1905, and died in 2000 at the age of 95. When he came to the Fox, he was 80.

Lowell, if ya really wanna open up the snakes nest of BC threads here is a summary I compiled (at DRMs request) in early 2004. There have SINCE been another cluster of a half dozen or so that are ALSO noteworthy. IMO the BC threads are NOT HOF worthy ... TOO much rancor and too much unplesantness re a bigtime project whose outcome is still unclear. (But then I'm the same guy who didn't think Ozzie smith belonged in baseball's hof any more than Trammell and Whittaker so ... caveat emptor)

these threads are circa 2003-2004 the ~dates and titles are given below:

july8 Any update on the current status of the BOOK CADILLAC

july11-15 Book-Cadillac Restoration!!!

july17-aug4 Book-Cadilac lives while the Statler dies

nov11 Book Cadillac

nov11-13 BOOK CADILLAC RESTORATION

nov19-21 Book Cadillac update

Dec18-23 Book Cadillac work to resume Jan. 5

Dec18-25 Statler To be Demolished

Dec23 Walbridge, Brinker to be Book Cadillac contractors

Jan14-16 Developer pulls out of Book Cadillac project

superlong but there is some BC stuff in it:
June27-Jan27 Taxes: Incentives, Breaks and Perks

Jan23 Book Hotel Developer Emerges

...

Yay Detroit!

WARNING: scrolling through them you might be suprised at who was posting inuendo and who wasn't tho ... Yay Detroit!

NOTE again there are another dozen or so AFTER these that are really compelling too esp when the schism between some vocal FoBCs and vocal FoSkulker happened. Too much nasty stuff tho for the HoF, keep it out, keep the HoF for ancient realestate shennigans, not stuff that's still plastic.

Peace!

Lowell, I'm tellin ya, The Madison-Lenox is coming down thread was a big one! It had people from all over the country chiming in.

And on the funny side - Itsjeff's January 1806 thread.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the HOF page, their is a link to the On the Lighter Side, which has both the 1806 and Livonia threads listed, or use this link.

I know I'm getting annoying but I REALLY want the Madison-Lenox Coming Down thread on the HOF section: it was breaking news, it was a Super thread, it caught national attention, it expressed the outrage of so many preservationists (including me)

Btw, I'm still boycotting the Illitches, haven't had a Hot'n Ready since

I vote for:

DSR

War with Livonia

and any thread about Quicken Loans moving downtown.

Very entertaining how folks claim to know the inside scoop and try to hold us all hostage with their "I can't tell" posts.

One memorable thread, while perhaps more suitable for an HOS rather than a HOF, is the one started after a fatal police officer shooting a couple of years ago that produced the famous "I didn't lose schitt" comment from one long-time poster.

I vote for the "Does Anyone Remember" thread about the mystery of the reclusive Emma Schuknecht and her fortune that everyone helped solve after 54 years.

Better find a thread about a race issue; as many people say "Why does it always have to be about race" How many times have you heard that!

I was gonna vote for the "Daily Hate" thread to end up in the HOS, but would anybody actually go read it (them)?!?!?
(Can you believe that one is almost 500 posts?!?)

Speaking of that, what ever happened to that guy? Get laughed off the forum?

Man that stuff had me laughing out loud....

Bumping to the top for more suggestions, and bringing up the Last Dime Store thread for possible inclusion.

Here's a thread that's destined for the HOF. It just got started so there's a lot of life and discussion left in her, but it's shaping up to be one of the greats. Give it a few months and, provided it doesn't become a factory thread, will be in the Hall:

Good suggestions. Dime store is now in the HOF, Firehouses on deck. Bright blue arrow by thread title indicates future HOF status.
