"Detroit is a classic "doughnut" post-urban city, seemingly pleasant around the outside, but empty in the middle. But now it is trying hard to plug the hole in its industrial heart..................."

Would you extrapolate on the errors for those of us too lazy to read?

I like the guy's Idea for the Packard plant. This article hits right on but i still think that many of the suburbanites around here do not want to move to Detroit.

The Brits probably don't recognize Dearborn as a suburb of Detroit. For them, Ford's HQ is in Detroit, along with GM, and not in Germany like Daimler/Chrysler's HQ.

The most interesting thing in this article is the talk about the Packard Building. Someone here on the forum talked about it celebrating its 50th anniversary since being abandoned by Packard Motors, yet no one on that thread ever mentioned anything about the redevelopment plans that UDM's dean Stephen Vogel mentions in the article. Definitely new news to me.

A few other things from the article.

quote:

"Now if you look at the city of Detroit, you find wide areas where there is no housing.

Umm... And where are those areas?

Not everything is lofts and, yes, there are vacant/abandoned properties - but was part of Detroit doesn't have housing?

As for Dean Vogel's plans for the Packard plant, I'll just say look at his results with the Madison-Lenox.

Oh, and someone really needs to tell the Brits how to spell "Super Bowl". It's two words - like "World Cup".

The audio report is really nice. It's good to hear a report about Detroit from an international news source that isn't all negative statements.

good post Fjw718

Off topic, but did anyone notice how unique Detroit's skyline looks in the picure where it says "listen to the programme?" I didn't recognize that this was Detroit, eventhough the article was about Detroit.

Seeing Cobo Arena made my think of Madison Square Garden in NYC. At any rate, I think any expansion of Cobo should not include the tearing down of Cobo Arena. Gut it out but don't tear it down. It has a unique look and should be preserved.

This was the original thread. Lowell, can you combine this with the other two clones? Thanks.
