I just got an email saying Doug McIntosh, president of Preservation Wayne and one of the principals of McIntosh Poris Associates, died this morning of a pulmonary embolism.

He was an active preservationist and a staunch advocate of the city.

He will be missed.

Wow. What a terrible loss. I can't believe someone that young who appeared to be rather fit passed of a heart condition.

Doug was an outstanding architect and big Detroit booster. It didn't matter if the project was a high profile award winning one or a neighborhood project that would likely garner little attention. He and Michael Poris put their resources behind them all.

Moderator, please move this post to the Discuss Detroit forum. This is a huge loss for the city and the region. It deserves to be on the discussion forum with the most traffic.

Doug's death certainly is a great loss in many ways. He will be missed.

Bvos: FYI...a pulmonary embolism is not a heart condition. Generally, but not always, it is a blood clot. Many years ago, a good friend of mine died of a pulmonary embolism at age 31 when she developed a blood clot after a period of inactivity due to a compound fracture of her ankle. never went past the planning/proposal stage. the site was at the terminus of washington blvd. (where it changes from divided to three lane road), and was to include the book cadillac and the triangular piece of property where the coney's are. this was all around '96-'97. the developer was sam danou, who recently bought the state plaza in corktown to serve as the trade center for detroit.

A very sad day for Detroit indeed. Doug was a friend of mine... this is horrible... I just saw him on Monday too and spent a good two hours with him at a meeting. Absolutely mindblowing.

Thanks Detourdetroit.

A sad loss indeed. I know there will be a large turnout. Between the architectural and business community, and all those folks at Preservation Wayne who had the pleasure of working with him... a truly wonderful guy!

There is most likely to be something in Saturday's paper. Look for something in upcoming issues of Hour Detroit and Between the Lines as well, hopefully among others.

I too was totally blown away by this. My partner Ed and I stopped by their house this past Saturday night on our way home from a bike ride. You'd never have had any idea that there was something wrong physically - apparently neither did Scotty or Doug.

I just talked with Scotty at lunch time and he's okay. His parents are there, and Doug's dad...perhaps another friend. He's going through the expected ping pong of emotions, but he's basically got it together. In his words, "I've had better days." Right now he's got the service to plan and absorb himself with. Distractions and keeping busy are probably good for him right now.

Some of you are also probably aware that their home was recently selected for and Hour Detroit magazine feature. They were frantically trying to get some rooms ready for that photo shoot. (Rooms selected by Hour were not rooms that were already "finished".) Scotty has decided to go ahead with the feature since that's what Doug would have wanted.

Adding a little more info to Detourdetroit's message above. I believe Scotty's plan was viewing 1-3 at Church of the Messiah, with funeral immediately following 3-?, and reception at their house on Seyburn at 5.

It sounds like there is going to be a big showing to send Doug off this Saturday....I think I have personally received 10 emails from friends. He was greatly admired and loved by many. What a wonderful way to have lived life...even one too short.

This is very sad to hear, and it's almost impossible to diagnose these things before they happen as there are rarely any symptoms. So sad. A great loss to the Detroit community. RIP

itsjeff....
....appreciate the concern. There was a reference to both me and Mr. McIntosh on another thread and I wasn't sure what it was pertaining to. BTW, I'm not sure where Jjabba lives, but I guess it could be said I live on the f-a-r west side.

In regards to the issue at hand, I'm very sorry to hear of Doug McIntosh. My memories of Detroit are old, and I am happy that an organization (Preservation Wayne) is out performing its function. I hope the organization is strong enough to survive its tragic loss.

I was not at the Funeral, but heard from folks that the turnout was amazing. The Church had seats for 300+ and they were all filled. People were crammed in and waiting outside. Unoffical estimate at around 500. I did not know him (met him once), but he sure touched alot of people.

The funeral was absolutely beautiful and the home that Scotty and Doug restored is just remarkable. Detroit has lost a visionary and a friend.
