In 1977 I joined the navy and was processed through the afees station in Detroit. In a few recent trips I've tried to locate a few of the buildings that I remember from this time period, but haven't had much luck. I knew the Greyhound bus terminal was gone, but haven't been able to find the Tremonti Building or the downtown Howard Johnsons. Does anybody know were these two buildings are (were). thanks (Message edited by Rossco on July 12, 2006) |

Thanks itjeff, Always wondered where the downtown HoJo was. Didn't some Buddist's Group buy it in the late 80's or early 90's and run a spiritual temple there. I vaguely remember reading in the papers how they were going to bring good Karma to The D. Well, Karma is in the eye of the beholder, or was it beauty? Oh well what do I know, just a city boy from 7 and Gratiot..... |

yup, the downtown hojo's was turned into "heaven on earth" hotel. can't remember the specifics, but we've discussed it here before. try the search function < . after that it was vacant for several years, becoming a days inn i believe around 2001, then the holiday inn express around 2004. i don't know if this is the building you are speaking of, but i have heard that an army processing office was located in a building on w.fort street, across from the downtown wayne county community college campus. [address might've been 1040 w.fort, not sure tho.] this building was torn down around 2002-2003 to make way for the new greyhound station (currently located between howard st. and w.lafayette, next to the lodge) that has yet to materialize... [rsa lived in the lafayette lofts around the corner from that building and was always intrigued by it's level of brick detail...] |

RSA, the AFEES, aka induction center was moved to somewhere around Madison and Gratiot, sometime after conscription ended. I went through there in 1978 when joined the Navy. (ex-MM2 CVN-65) |

Wasn't it on the south side of Gratiot, around Chene? Looks like an old mansion, gray stone, rounded corners, like the Charfoos offices? |

Last night I searched through my enlistment papers, and found that the Tremonti Bldg. was located at 426 Clinton Street. I'm, not sure if there is a building there at present, but the next time I take a road trip I'll check it out. |

In the late 70's through the 80s the indiction center was on Gratiot offa Brush. If it had a Clinton street address it was due to that building straddling the block but it was effectively offa gratiot and brush |

A bit off topic but the Holiday Inn Express at Washington Blvd. was previously: • “Heaven on Earth" Inn • Mariner's Inn • Days Inn Downtown • Howard Johnson's Downtown Any others missing? |

Having lost my student deferment and being reclassified 1-A. That building, I referenced, with its INDUCTION CENTER sign on it was burned into my brain as a place I wanted to avoid forever. I was saved from that fate by the draft lottery. I believe that building currently has a few Gov't offices in it, if the plumber shows up early enough today, I'll check out its current tenants. |

I don't know why I couldn't have googled it before I asked the question. Sorry. It just seemed odd to see the name "Mariner's Inn" on the list of hotel names. |

This was the building I was thinking of. Did this ever serve as the AFEES?

Yes, it's still there. I thought I went there for a military physical and tests, as well as giving a friend a ride there for the same thing, but maybe it's my lost memory. |

Another question, Mikem. How do you post photos like the recent one on this thread that are so large and with such great detail? By the time I resize, compress and whatever to get them on this site they are usually either the size of a postage stamp or so grainy it's hard to make out any detail. Livedog2 |

I heard the MEPS building I went through was torn down. I know it was near greektown as I had a free food pass that I walked over there with. Such a bizzare experience at the time. 1990 was the year I went in. Building was old and crappy. |

When I went into the Marine Corps back in the early/mid 1960's they sent us to Fort Wayne in Detroit. As a matter of fact men from all brances went there and they did the initial physicals on us there. We all ate and stayed in the same sleeping area regardless of branch of service. Then the next day they segregated us by branch and sent us on our way to "boot camp" and in my case San Diego to MCRD to make "Hollywood" Marines out of us. That's what the guys that went to Parris Island or PI for "boot camp" called us. Livedog2 |

I Googled the old address of the Afees Station found on my enlistment papers (426 Clinton St), and found the "Department of Corrections Special Services Unit/Probation Intakes" currently operates from this address. I assume this was originally the Tremonti Building, but will need to check it out in the future. (Message edited by Rossco on July 14, 2006) |
