Welcome to Chapel Hill Ministries. Snappped today. I find it difficult to believe it would be rehabbed. Anybody know? I also posted this on the Grande Ballroom thread [read it if you haven't - it is hall of fame stuff]. I started this as new thread as this potentially big news may have overlooked in a long running thread.

There is a Chapel Hill Missionary Church on Joy, http://www.chapelhilldetroit.o rg/About.html, but I couldn't find any reference to expansion or relocation, etc. |

That has to be the one Planner 727. The About us list the pastor as Rev. LaMont Smith, whose name is in yellow at the bottom of the purple cirle. |

Good catch... that's funny I was trying to zoom in on that pic but was unable. It has a large area inside (obviously).. I wouldn't rule out a crude restoration of the ballroom area. |

Furthermore, that image painted in the middle of the circle is the exact image of thier church on 5000 Joy Road on the SW side. Guess I need some rest. |

What the?!! Aren't there better buildings condition wise to build a church in around that area? I can't even imagine the amount of money it would take to make the Grande even half way decent again. Well, with a nice new drop ceiling and blue tarp on the roof they should be good to go. |

yeah, but remember what dETROITfUNK said on his site on a Grande feature awhile back... "Abandon all hope, all ye (preservationists) who enter here!" (or something like that!) If the church is truly going to use the existing structure, I hope they do something to help forestall the further deterioration of the building, but I can't see a church having too much extra $$$ to do anything beyond what their needs are...here's wishing I'm wrong! |

Well, I may never have set foot inside during the glory days (daze? lol), but at least I got to see the old place if it does meet the wrecking crew! |

If Fellowship Chapel can move from the 6 mile and Evergreen location into a such a building as the new one on Outer Drive, I dont see a problem as to why they cant. |

Lowell !! Holy Smokes!! The Friends of the Grande were aware of the sale in May to Chapel Hill. We were also aware that they did a nice job of boarding the place up and even doing some masonry work. We can only hope that they will reuse the buildng and NOT raze it. Leo www.thegrandeballroom.com |

The Big Black Church should keep he Grande Ballroom utilized and build the church inside and out. Tearing the historical landmark would be a disaster. |

Vizion, I don't think anyone has a problem with the church moving to bigger and/or better quarters. The question of the day seems to be whether Chapel Hill Ministries will rehab the building (seems unlikely) or demo the building for new construction. I can't imagine that a church would want to put the money into the building to rehab this place up to code, let alone to historic restoration standards. This building needs a lot of help. It seems demolition for a new structure would be more condusive for the specialized nature of a church building. |

That place was certainly never a house of "God". Lightning will strike the first restoration worker to touch the building if it's rehabbed as a church! ZAP!!! "OUCH, Damn it!! That burnt my ass!" ZAP! ZAP! |

It will be a miracle if that place gets rehabbed. It's not it was the Fox or anything like it. Let's face it, the place was going downhill when they had rock groups (like THe Who) playing there. That was forty years ago!! |

call the church and find out what their intentions are.... simple as that. All they can say is we aren't telling or they are telling.. |

Only being in a state historic district(the National Register is worthless on that front) can save a building from razing-and even that doesn't stop Detroit from tearing down structures with that designation. |
