Just posing a question. I realize that the Detroit Zoo no longer has elephants.

Can somebody stir my memory about where they went? I caught a report of an elephant by the name of "Winky" that attacked and killed a zookeeper recently. Correct me if I am wrong but weren't the Detroit elephants named "Winky" and "Wanda"?

Not our Winky!!

"Winkie, a female Asian elephant who had a difficult and sometimes violent stay at Henry Vilas Zoo, killed a handler on Friday and injured a trainer at a private elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. ..."

The Vilas Park Zoo is by Lake Wingra, about 1 1/2 miles from the State Capitol and very near the University of Wisconsin-Madison--and close to where I lived/worked for 27 years. A really nice zoo actually.

It also had a "killer" polar bear there too, but he usually ate the ducks that ventured too close. He was shot to death by the cops when some mentally-retarded guy got inside his space sometime during the 1990s. The letters to the editor in the two dailies generally wished the guy was shot, instead.

Here's a blurb about other Winkies.

Just wanted to be sure it wasn't the Detroit Winky. I'm sure Fox "News" would have spread as much fear and terror as posible if it was.

Just heard on Nashville Radio that the Winky that killed the handler here in Tennessee (Howenwald TN) will not be put down. This was a special request by the handler. She had said if anything were to ever happen to her, the animal(s) should not be harmed. Im sure they will take a lot more percaution with all the elephants now.

Went to the Detroit Zoo yesterday. What a waste of $75.50. $11.00x4 $44.00 admission $5.00 parking and $26.50 food. After spending 20 minutes in line to see the polar bears, there weren't any. Zip Zero Nada. plus there was only 1 seal swimming around. Give me the old the exhibit. Atleast we could see the animals. If I wanted to see animal in there "natural habitat" I would go to Alaska. The same goes for the monkey exhibit. Couldn't see a one. Nothing. Again, If I wanted to see monkeys doing their thing in their "natural setting" I'd go to Africa. Most of the other animals were so far away you'd need a telescope to see the darned things. Give me Toledo Zoo. The apes are right up close as are the monkeys and other animals. Seriously, these animals are not endangered and are there for our enjoyment. What enjoyment is there if you can't see the animals. What? the animals may not be happy in small cages? There freaking animal.

Big Daddy sounds like a Pacy clone.

Go in the winter if you want to see the Polar bears being more active.

Perhaps someone stick you in a cage for their enjoyment?
