I was doing some research on Mt. Olivet Cemetery and read that section 15 (Close to Van Dyke) contains many of the Detroit gangsters from the 30's/40's.

It got me to thinking about who are the most famous gansters to have their final resting place in Detroit cemeteries? Anyone know where some of the people from the purple gang are buried?

Thanks.

Gansters = Gangsters.

The Purple Gang was Jewish, so chances are that those guys were buried in Jewish cemeteries or in cemeteries that have Jewish sections.

Mt. Olivet is a Catholic cemetery with lots of Italian-Americans, so it's a good bet there are some Toccos and Giacalones and Zerillis and Licavolis in there.

Was he buried as a survivor, or did he die normally first?

Sam Drapkin lived 56 yrs. Review the list and see that many of the gangsters lived only into their 30s. That is what is meant by "survivor."

As per custom, you must be dead to be buried in a Jewish Cemetery. No doubt, Drapkin qualified.
Livernoisyard can provide us with the details of his death, or the deaths of the others mentioned.
There's tons of books about these infamous louts.

jjaba, at 12th and Colingwood looking for some action.

Wasn't the action closer to 11th Street? A vacant lot today...

12th and Collingwood was the sight of the Collingwood Masacre which saw the dimise of Herman "Hymie" Paul, Joe Lebovitz and Izzy Sutker. The three were members of Detroit's Little Jewish Navy, but double-crossed the Purples once too often.

"12th and Collingwood was the sight of the Collingwood Masacre..."

And what a sight that site was! But could you cite it a bit better? That apartment was somewhat east of 12th Street...closer to 11th?

Is there an 11th street? I thought Woodrow Wilson was the next parallel street to the east of 12th Street. I grew up between 12th and Woodrow Wilson. I never heard of an 11th street.

I forgot the name for what would be 11th. Anyway, that former apartment was somewhat east of 12th, inside that long block.

Actually, it was west of 12th St. on Collingwood. The address was 1740 Collingwood, Apt. 211. I belive the building is still standing, albeit abandoned. Went passed there recently but wa looking at some other historic structures in the area.

It was about 25,000 miles west or about 1/2 block east of 12th. I'd head east if I were going there from 12th Street.

1740 Collinwood

The last time I was there eight years ago, there were three cars being stripped across the street from the vacant lots where the apartment once stood. Or so I thought. But not about the cars, though. Those dozen guys were busy.

Livernoisyard is blowing smoke. Ain't no 11th Street.
Everybody says the bldg. was near 12th and Collingwood. That's close enough.

Google it and see what pops up. Livrnoisyard can start off 25,000 miles away, and still not get there. But, wow, how many Mc Donalds piss stops is that? That would be 8 times across the USA.

There was an 11th street, it just never got near Collingwood. Only ran a couple of blocks south of Michigan on a 1930s map. It looks like it became Harrison north of Michigan Ave.

I'd have to go into some older maps to find out the when and where of it. On some of the old maps there are 1/2 number streets that don't exist anymore.

There probably were other numbered streets in that area other than 12th, 14th, or what-not at one time.

But my point is: the distance east off 12th Street of that apartment is over 1/2 the distance between 12th and 14th Streets. So that's why I monikered it as "11th."

LiveDog2: Google Earth Collingwood. Mapquest places the address just over 1/2 "block" east of 12th. There were vacant lots there a decade ago, and no real Renaissance is occurring there. So, it should be a vacant lot today. Might even see some cars on blocks...

Speaking of the Bernstein brothers, aticles about the Purples mention that they grew up in a poor jewish section on the east side of the city.
Anyone know what the specific boundries of this area where?

Thanks.

Joey and Isadore Bernstein moved to California and became legitimate businessmen. Abe was found dead in his room at the Book Cadillac Hotel in 1968. Ray suffered a stroke in prison in 1963, was released in 1964 and died at Um of M Med Center in 1966.

Jjaba, are you sure Mike Selik died in 1996? I have a book that was written in 2000 and said he was the last living Purple at the time. Was living in a Southfield nursing home at the time.

The 1925 Sanborn map of 1740 Collingwood:

1740 Collingwood 1925

Sure is a large, rambling, three story apartment building, even had storefronts on 12th St.

Jjaba, I just about soiled myself when I read what Sam Drapkin said after he was shot with nine (9) machinegun bullets.

Then, I read this account of the only survivor of the St. Valentine's Day massacre before he died. One of the dying men, Frank "Tight Lips" Gusenberg, was asked who shot him, he replied, "Nobody shot me."

What's with these tough fukking Jewish gangsters? I guess the message is don't fukk with those Jews -- Hezbollah is finding out how tough those Jews really are and they're not even gangsters! :-)

Sorry about the dates. jjaba read it that way.
Maybe there was a gap between when the book was written and published. Well, he's dead now. That IS known.

Thanks Livedog2, jjaba tells it like it tis.
