Just saw on the News that there is a new magazine called "Faces of Detroit". The first issue features Charles Pugh (spelling?) from Fox2 (who lives downtown as I understand). Anyone seen/read it yet? It's a free magazine, and kinda like Hour Detroit from the looks. Where can you get it, do they have an online version? I'm curious to see what it's like, the title sounds interesting.

Apologies for the threadjack, as I can't add or know anything about this print magazine called "Faces of Detroit". But, but while googling it, I came across a fascinating webblog from a fellow Detroiter that I had never seen or heard of before that I thought I should share.
Take a look.

so, the website is basically a guy who goes around taking photos of poor homeless people in the City of Detroit and then posting them on his website. To me it seems a little bit like this is exploiting them. I'm not exactly sure how I should feel about the website. However, I do know that it wasn't "touching". It was more sickening then anything else. We have such a horrible homeless situation in the City and all this guy can do is post pictures of them?

I understand that he also attaches "their story" along with the photo, I'm just not sure exactly how I feel about it all. I know i'm not precisely comfortable with it. I'm glad the guy has won awards and stuff for his work, but he could, I don't know, provide places for people to donate money to that assist the destitute and homeless. Just my opinion...

mcpd1300, I'm surprised you still have time to post on this site after all of the hours you spend volunteering at COTS and other soup kitchens.

You must be exhausted.

Quite frankly, Steve, my money at church goes toward the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. I may not have the time to volunteer, but at least I remember those that aren't exactly as fortunate as myself.

Well, Mcpd1300, exploitation is one way to look at it. Another would be is that he is highlighting the human element to homelessness, and raising conciousness.

Since the blog creator doesn't seem to be doing it for monetary benefit, I don't necessarily share the exploitation view.

On the info page, read through the MetroTimes article link, gives a little perspective into the creator and his motives.

After all, he could just ignore them as well, just like we all tend to do too often.

Rrl, start a new thread with that site. Important topic that is going to lead to more discussion without a doubt.

Sorry Butterfly, haven't seen the mag yet.

Found it:

www.facesofdetroit.com

Looks great, definitely a must-read for Detroiters. Gonna get me a copy as soon as possible.

Actually the info was sent to me by email by a guy working for the mag, he had been reading this thread. Yet another indication as to just who is reading this site, looking for comments, opinions and ideas. Well, the guy could be just be a regular poster.

You may now go back to your Snowsuit discussion.

It is probably another loser magazine like Hour. If Charles Pugh is on the cover than that is probably a bad sign. That guy is a ghetto joke, not worth the news he puts out.

I know the publishers. A lovely couple, husband and wife. I think they have a great idea and they have my support, completely.

PS - you can find the magazine all over downtown. Check the Ren Cen, a boutique called Fashion Council has them.

Mani- what's the skinny on Charles Pugh that makes him a "ghetto joke"? Okay, so he's not on the heavy duty hard hitting newscasts but I've always found him to be as credible as most of the people on any of the Detroit newscasts.

And what's up with your hatred of Hour magazine? I know it's not the Washington Post, Time magazine or some other hard hitting journalistic rag but accept it for what it is- a light magazine that highlights some of the things in our region. Give the publishers some credit for at least putting out a magazine that supports our area and highlights some things that you might never know about.

Any magazine that shows off some of the good things about our area deserve some loving at least. I wish these guys at Faces of Detroit all the best of luck. They'll probably need it because it's so tough seeing magazine get launched and then to fail years, if not months down the line. I hope they have some longevity.
