I saw on channel 7 news that Denis Illitch was the victim of two purse snatchers. She was on the east side of Detroit walking down the street when two men approached and demanded her purse. She gave it up and ran inside a building. She thanked the police for their quick investigation and they now have two suspects in custody. I'm glad the cops responded quickly, etc., but I wonder if Jane Doe would have received the same attention.

it's really disappointing when people try to make it seem like east-side crime is a detroit thing. the same thing happens on the east sides of the suburbs too. i have a friend who was robbed on the east side of rochester hills. east side crime happens everywhere, not just in detroit. please d

Oh give me a break. East-side Detroit crime is higher than rochester hills, Grosse Pointe, and every other east side community.

The longer we deny crime is worse in detroit than the surrounding areas, the worse the crime will get.

Right, because as soon as folks on this Forum admit that crime is higher in the city, then I'm sure each and every one of you will do something to make it better. Give me a fucking break.

Geez, I wasn't trying to start a debate on the existence of crime. I only wanted to know if an unkown female had her purse stolen in Detroit, would the police even have bothered to investigate as they did with Denise Ilitch. BTW I live in the burbs and crime is quite high here too. It just doesn't make the news as much, probably because it is usually non-violent.

And you are right on about that. A purse-snatching is, sadly, very low on DPD's list of priorities...

LMAO...I was actually going to inquire about this very thing. My basement doesn't leak at all, but the goddamn drainage system backs up and puts about a 1/2 inch of water in about 1/4 of my basement with every rain. I'm about to fill the drain with concrete and kiss my flooding problems goodbye.

For basement drains, you need to install a removable standpipe. This is a piece of pipe with a soft rubber flange/gasket that is inserted into the drain. The grate has to be removed first.

I'm not sure if these are readily available, or if you 'll have to make out of some 2-3" pvc and maybe a toilet floor seal or tank seal, depending on your floor drains. A good plumbing supply place, like Warren Pipe, on Hoover and Stephens, would know.

This adds static head, which means the backflow has to reach the amount of the height of the pipe before in overflows into your basement. It may only need to be a foot tall, or less to work. The standpipe can be easily removed if you need to use the drain.

I think that she was on Kercheval between St. Jean and Mt. Elliott just south of Indian Village.

East or west of Indian Village? That's a curious spot for her to be, although you give a curiously wide geographical range. One has to admit, there are a few dangerous neighborhoods in that range.

"On Kercheval between Mt. Elliott and St. Jean, south of Indian Village."

That's not even a place. "South of Indian Village" would be between Jefferson and the river. Mt. Elliott and St. Jean are miles apart, too. Just between them you'd have the Boulevard, Van Dyke, and Cadillac.

I disagree, mon geek ami. The stretch of land south of Jefferson includes Indian Village, too. Like Indian Village Manor, etc.

To be truly south of Indian Village, one must be in the water. So it's obvious that Mrs. Ilitch's purse was snatched while she was water skiing.

Properly,

Indian Village Manor and the like are the "Gold Coast" of Detroit.... not part of Indian Village.

Until someone proves that statement completely false.

Obviously any woman who walks with a purse in certain areas should expect to have her purse snatched. ;)

Ah, but the John Battice Ford estate was said to be "on the water, in Indian Village" before it was moved to Windmill Pointe Drive in the late 20s.

I agree Itsjeff, she was surely out yachting--a victim of modern pirates.

Quick, we somehow have to find a way to pin the blame for this on Denise Illitch, thereby removing the blame from the criminal.

I'll start off:

1) She was trying to score drugs, therefore she got what she deserved.

2) Her mouth wrote a check that her ass couldn't cash.

3) The ostentatious way in which she walked and carried her purse proved too much of a temptation to a normally honest passerby, and therefore they couldn't help but mug her.

4) She took her eyes off of her purse for a split second, and therefore violated Ltorivia's rules of property retention in the city of Detroit.

I agree with 1). The rest are pretty sad to see attributed to a crime victim.

If you're in the city committing a crime then tough shit. If you're in the city minding your own business then it is ridiculous to blame the victim.

I dislike the Ilitch empire but I wish no ill will such as this on any of them. Hopefully Denise is dealing with this as best she can.

Good catch, Inspector Itsjeff.

But does your dog bite?

The exact location that I was trying to reference is the block that is surrounded by Kercheval, Van Dyke, Durand and Parker. The front is facing Kercheval. 2 streets away from Indian Village. Near Butzel Junior High School.

Blame Denise first, excuse the cycle of institutional racism that drives certain neighborhood economics to the level of theft.

Dillpicklesoup do you really think the snatchers know what a Chanel purse is or care? I'm sure they only wanted the contents. I can't believe the attitude here. She didn't deserve it just because she's rich. People dressed like bums don't get mugged?
