I had no sooner finished reading Desiree Cooper's profile of Maryann Mahaffey entitled "A dynamic duo's biggest battle: Detroit's power couple discover new roles and inspiration" in this morning's Free Press
(http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060727/NEW S01/607270314/1122) when I heard the news reported on Channel 4 (http://www.clickondetroit.com/ news/9583328/detail.html).

Thank you for your years of service to our city. R.I.P. Mary Ann Mahaffey.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick visited the hospital early this morning with City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson, said Kilpatrick spokesman James Canning.

Well there's a final vision to take to the grave...

RIP, Maryann. I'll always remember her shaking hands at Menjo's during her campaigns in the 1980s.

She was a kind, intelligent and gutsy woman. May we all aspire to have those qualities.
She will be dearly missed.

She embodied what a true Detroiter is all about.

Thanks, Maryann Mahaffey, for showing us that the fight for justice and fairness for all Detroit citizens is enternal.

I like this meeting.

COUNCIL PRESIDENT MAHAFFEY: The Clerk will call the roll.

CLERK: Member Mahaffey?

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Aye.

CLERK: Member Cockrel the Witch?

MEMBER COCKREL: Aye and I wish everyone would stop calling me that.

CLERK: Member Cockrel “Junior?”

MEMBER COCKREL JR: Present, and stop making quotation marks with your fingers when saying, “junior.”

MEMBER BATES: I wish we could, “Junior.”

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Knock it off. Continue with the roll call.

CLERK: Member McPhail?

MEMBER MCPHAIL: Present.

CLERK: Member Collins?

MEMBER COLLINS: Pwent!

CLERK: I’m sorry?

MEMBER COLLINS: Sorry. That’s “present” through a cannoli shell.

CLERK: Member Bates?

MEMBER BATES: Right here, Sugar.

CLERK: Member Watson?

WATSON: Oh, yes, God is Good!

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: A quorum being present, I gavel this session of Council to order.

MEMBER BATES: Madam President, I request a fifteen minute break.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Without objection, council is adjourned for 30 minutes.

(60 minutes later)

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Council is now in session. I’d like to address the homeless situation for a moment.

MEMBER TINSLEY-TALABI: Excuse me, Madam President?

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Yes, Member Tinplate-Salami?

MEMBER TINSLEY-TALABI: Before we address your homeless thing, my inkpen has run dry. This is the second time this has happened this year. Therefore, I’d like to adjourn your issue for two weeks so that we can subpoena the Mayor’s Director of Procurement to find out if the City is fully funding our pen supply requests.

MEMBER COLLINS: Further to Member Tandoori-Wahabi’s request, I also suggest that RAD conduct an expensive, verbose, yet incomprehensible study on the topic.

MEMBER MCPHAIL: Without objection, the motion will be carried.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Er, ah, point of order, Member McPhail.

MEMBER MCPHAIL: Whut?

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Two things: One, there’s no motion present, two… well… I forgot already. Wait. Oh, yeah. I’m President of this body and I’ll announce passed motions if you don’t mind.

MEMBER MCPHAIL: My apologies, Madam President. I thought I was chairing today.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: No, we distributed a memo saying how the chair rotation works. Each member will chair the meeting if the first letter of his or her last name matches the first letter of the day of the week. Today is Monday, my name is “Mahaffey,” so I’m chairing.

MEMBER WATSON: Thank you, Jesus.

MEMBER COCKREL: I have a walk-on. Can we discuss places to get really awful pantsuits? I’ve about worn out this Pagliacci costume.

MEMBER COLLINS: I have a place that I use for all my formal evening tents. I’ll get you the name later.

MEMBER BATES: That reminds me. One of my staffers wants to go on a “fact-finding mission.” Do any of the female members know a good hair stylist?

MEMBER COLLINS: No.

MEMBER COCKREL: No.

MEMBER MCPHAIL:No.

MEMBER WATSON: No.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: No.

MEMBER TINSLEY-TALABI: Lord, no.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Colleagues, if I may, I’d like to spend a few minutes talking about the plight of the homeless.

MEMBER COLLINS: Madam President, while you do that, I’d like to shuffle papers furiously next to my microphone for a while so that no one can hear us.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Without objection. Anyway, colleagues, I think it’s important that this body address the homeless situation. As you know, with Bush’s illegal incursion into the sovereign nation of Falluja, we’re seeing reports of several Shiites left homeless. Having solved all of our own problems here in Detroit, I think it’s important that this body draft a resolution denouncing Bush’s invasion into Iraq using non-union labor. Bush must know that he simply cannot invade Falluja and expect the entire nation to blindly follow him like sheep. Do you agree?

MEMBER COLLINS: Yes

MEMBER BATES: Yes.

MEMBER COCKREL: Yes.

MEMBER MCPHAIL: Yes.

MEMBER COCKREL JR: Yes.

MEMBER WATSON: Yes.

MEMBER TINSLEY-TALABI: Baa. Er, I mean… yes?

MEMBER WATSON: Madam President, I’m sure I speak for Jesus when I say that I support your proposed resolution. However, He has spoken to my heart and commands me to put a hold on City Contract No. 13854021 without comment. Praise him.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: Very well. What’s next?

MEMBER COLLINS: Colleagues, I’d like to hear some testimony from residents of the Bethune Projects in Highland Park who say that the non-union contract employees replacing their roof used disrespectful language to some of the elderly residents there.

MEMBER COCKREL: Uh, if they’re in Highland Park, may I ask how this is a concern of this Body?

MEMBER WATSON: I agree that we have no jurisdiction in this matter. Therefore, I recommend that we listen to no more than ten hours of testimony, then move on to other issues with which we have no input. Ain't God good.

MEMBER MAHAFFEY: That's an excellent suggestion.

MEMBER BATES: Madam President, I see that we have room full of people ready to present testimony, the quorum is present and we are ready to go. I request a 30 minute break.

PRESIDENT MAHAFFEY: Without objection, council is adjourned until tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

(session ends)

That's why I called the it Detroit City "CLOWNSIL"
