I commute in on I-96. I leave Howell at 8 am and am usually in Wixom by 8:30 depending on traffic. Something I've noticed during the last two months or so is that weekday traffic NEVER stops anymore during my commute. Traffic is still heavy but it never stops, even on Mondays when it would sometimes come to a screeching halt just east of Brighton, and almost certainly be stopped at the Milford Rd. exit.

Has anyone noticed lighter traffic volumes on other area freeways? I'm wondering if this is a sign of the poor economy, higher gas prices or some combo of the two?

Could be folks on vacation. Seems like traffic is always lighter in the summer months.

Vacations, along with an absence of school buses and changes in day-care drop-offs, all contribute to easier morning commutes during the summer months.

On I96 out of downtown cops have taken a break from ticket on a daily basis, thus it's no longer a clusterfuck at the 96/275/14 interchange.

I've noticed that traffic along 94 between AA and Detroit has been erratic lately. It's free sailing at or above posted speeds one day, and then the next day it crawls at below posted speeds the whole way grinding to a halt near US 23 in AA, near Metro Airport and closer in to downtown.

The Sfld has been the same way too. Smooth sailing even with all the construction one day and then gridlock the entire highway the next with no change in construction activity.

I've been in Royal Oak for about two years and I work in Livonia...

My route is to take 13 mile to Southfield to I-96...

I-96 was never a problem since few people are commuting from downtown into the 'burbs in the morning, but for the first two years I lived here, I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS would come to a dead stop a few time on Southfield fwy...I thought it was just because it is only three lanes and it feeds into downtown, but this year I haven't gotten stopped hardly at all...able to do 70-80 the whole time pretty much...

So while I'm in a different area than the OP, I have noticed quite a difference this year in rush hour traffic

That's what sprawl brings you. I hope everyone searching for newer and greener pastures gets stuck in traffic jams.

Call your state rep., state senator, or city manager and bitch to them about it!

Morena:

Why would we write our state rep to bitch about a lack of traffic jams? And what is your problem?

I read the original post incorrectly so I apologize but asking what my problem is right now is like poking a finger in my chest b/c I haven't eaten anything today and I'm super pissed.

So don't start none and won't be none! Comprende?

Yeah, the Lodge out of the city in the morning and into the city in the afternoon is pretty sweet. Just have to worry about the people that think the fast lane is ok for them to sit in and do 60mph during rush hour.

And I thought the plant shutdowns were the first two weeks of July?

I'm been driving in on West bound 94 for three years. Its always lighter in summer.

Tomorrow I'm closing on a house in Hamtramck. My commute should be lessened many times over.

1953, cool beans on your new house.

I fell in love with Hamtramck 10 years ago at Christmas time. The maindrag was thronged with Christmas shoppers of all types. I even saw -- swear to God -- a couple of nuns. It seemed like a real chunck of honest to God, diverse urban living. How has the city changed since then?
What restaurants to you recommend?

Definately not a short commute from Midtown to work in Warren this morning. My 20 min. drive took over an hour because of an "accident investigation" at 75 and 8 mile. What a mess!!!

just had to vent for a second:-)

I heard Detroit does not have traffic jams, because of your great freeway system?

It's easier to drive to Dearborn then to take a bus. But, I want to keep the bus service because it's there if I need it and also I want to keep it for those who depend on it.

So, Let's all use SMART and DDOT more to ensure that the SMART tax on the tuesday ballot can work to protect state funding and get more federal transit grants and more industry support.

I'm sure by all working together that we can have the best public bus and mass transit system in the World.

We put the World on wheels, so let's show the World that we care about others and all use the bus wherever possible.

I did and I really like the SMART buses and will miss them when they leave Livonia.

I'm going to try and bring them back with a new petition drive.

So, please comment on my mass transit supportive website. So, I can bring the big buses back.

Just listen to Newsradio 950's traffic and weather "on the 8's" and avoid the traffic snarls. Of course then when you encounter a new accident that hasn't gotten to 950 yet... then you have to sit....

Newsradio 950 seems to often ignore I-94 on the Eastside.

Um Brandon, maybe not on a regular basis, but downtown was extremely congested yesterday around 4-4:30 pm. With a sold out CoPa, the Lions practice at Ford Field, and the festival at Hart Plaza, not to mention any other events that I might have missed, downtown was bustling and very congested with auto traffic.

1953, which area of Hamtramck are you putting down roots?
