No leads/leashes, but I can put you in touch with a no kill rescue group, if you need it. How old is the dog?

That's where I got this beastie, also missing a toe, but now 95# of muscle.

Shameless posting of dog photo, but if he looks similar, you can use it for a Wanted Poster.

please give the dog hot compresses on his foot for approximately five minutes at a time, every six hours. after the affected area is loosened up, clean it, and dry it thoroughly, and apply neosporin or triple antibiotic cream. bandage it up as best you can, to keep the foot clean and dry.

email me at the_carl@hotmail.com for further details. i can help you.

Easier than a compress, a bit more effective, would be soaking the paw in a warm water/hydrogen peroxide 50/50 mixture, or betadine solution if you have it, for about 10 minutes. Then apply what Thecarl said. The soaking helps remove all the dirt from the paws, but it is difficult to hold the dog in the right position for it, I had to corner mine under a desk so he couldn't escape.

Vets would give you Nolvasan (blue stuff) for the soaking and Animax cream for ointment. Nail infections are a long term treatment thing, and usually end up in a toe amputation, from my experience.

Good stuff, Thanks I will do my best although it is bubled up on the foot an actual wound is barely visible from where the nail was actually lost. would that still be the best method?

hornwrecker, God bless. my characterization of the situation was that urbanoutdoors may not have had at his/her disposal many remedies, or the funds to purchase them. the purpose of the compress for five minutes is to stimulate the vasculature so that topical antibiotics can be absorbed. the danger in applying heat for longer periods of time is that it could induce the infection to migrate.

from urbanoutdoors's characterization, i think the pet is reasonably compliant.

it's nice to know that people care...thanks, hornwrecker and urbanoutdoors!

I'd go with the soaking. If you don't have hydrogen peroxide, use some salt in the water, or anti-bacterial soap. From what you've said it sounds like he ripped the nail off, and will probably need minor surgery to do a an amputation of the last toe to clean it up. The Anti-Cruelty Society has a good rep if you need help. (let them put some of my donations to use)

Hell, mine went through a bad nail infection, and subsequent nail-ectomy last year so it is still fresh in what brain cells I possess. I've still got the blue stuff if it is needed, and a large sized shipping crate.

You might give some info and a picture to Blondy up at Canine to 5. Some of her customers might recognize the dog and be able to help with a reunion.

You can also take the dog to the humane society for a scan. It might be chipped. Both of our dogs are chipped in case they get lost with out their tags. Dr. Smaller is a very good guy at HS and his charges are reasonable.

Urbanoutdoors - it's really wonderful to know that people still respect animals and are willing to care for them. you're a good person. thank you. if you had found this black lab two years down the road and not found an owner. i would have adopted him, but i'm renting as well. - andy

I didn't realize that dogs had lips? Maybe this is another wound that needs soaking.

Novi to Corktown may sound strange. But I live in Bozeman, MT and I had friend whose dog ran away. We got a call 3 months later. The dog had turned up in Livingston, MT which is about an hour from here and over a mountain range. It was a lab mix.

I have Lab mixes and the one was ALWAYS darting out the front door. She's older now and really has no interest in wandering. Labs are adventerous and the poor thing was probably looking for some excitement. Read on...

Quote:
Although the Lab is the epitome of family dogs, he needs a fairly active household to satisfy his need for exercise and work. Daily walks, romps in a fenced yard, and games of fetch keep his mind and body in shape. Unless these needs are satisfied, the Lab may become a wanderer, a digger, or a chewer.

Update: The dog is still at my house. I took it to paterson. No fleas, no worms, ear infection, chipped tooth, and found out it is not missing a nail. The absess is just large and will hopefully go down soon.(apparently I can't count to four, or else I probably would have seen it had four on the front of the foot). My Landlord still says No go to keeping it so I am trying to find it a good home.

Urban: Call local vets and ask that they put signs up in their offices. Many folks call vets asking for free pets that people drop off. Might be a good place to start looking for TOES a new home (and someone may have called the vet to report the dog lost). Also try the local animal shelter or Detroit Animal Control to see if anyone has reported TOES missing.

AW, he's cute! Seems friendly and like he's just been on the streets a while. If he's housebroken, he was a family pet at one time. He does tricks, they liked the dog well enough to train him and socialize with him. Post these pics up at the local corner stores, grocery, pubs, laundro-mat, etc. Someone is bound to recognize him. Betcha some poor kid misses him.

Urban: Thanks for taking the time to care about an animal that wandered into your life. Many wouldn't have been bothered, especially treating ear infections and an abcessed toe. You deserve the Golden Pooper Scooper Award!!

Thanks, He is a great dog with a few minor problems and would make a great pet for anypne with a back yard. Oh yeah I forgot to put plays well with others in my flyer. Unfortunately my landlord doesn't want me keeping him. I don't want to take him to the humane society but I may have to by next week.

Good news all, I found him a home. Some guy came all the way from Ann Arbor to get him. I will miss him though he really tired my dog out, but I just quit my job yesterday, so It would have been hard to keep both of them. Thanks again to all for your help.
