The attached post card says, “Davison School, Hamtramck, Mich.” There is an old Model T parked in front of the school which dates the card to sometime back in the 1920’s. I know this school and it is located on the Southwest corner of Davison Ave. E. and Jos Campau which puts it in the Detroit City Limits, today.

My question is does anyone know if Hamtramck extended this far North of the current Northern boundary of Carpenter and Jos Campau back in the 1920’s? And, that in fact Davison School was within the City Limits of Hamtramck instead of Detroit or is this a mistake of some sort?

Hamtramck Township was around prior to the City annexation and took up much of the East Side.

Does the post card say City of Hamtramck on it?

I must be missing some kind of subtlety in either your question, Detroitplanner or your answer because I don’t understand your question given the fact that it says what it says on the post card. And, I stated what it says on the card, “Davison School, Hamtramck, Mich.” Please explain!

1798 - The Township of Hamtramck was established. Extended from the Detroit River to 8 Mile included most of the current East Side.

1901 - Hamtramck was established as a village.

1922 - Hamtramck is incorporated as a city.

Hamtramck's current boundaries were established in 1922 when it became a city. Prior to that, the township and village boundaries were whittled down by annexations from Detroit and the Grosse Pointes. It's possible that the school stood within Hamtramck boundaries.

Portions of Detroit are served by the Hamtramck post office and share a zip code, I think.
