An email I received from a freind this mourning:

quote:

It's amazing all the neat things that are getting fixed up in Detroit. If this does not make sense, please excuse it. Don't know if I told you my employer’s tale of woe. 2 weeks ago Monday, some very enterprising thieves stole 4 of the commercial grade air conditioners from the roof of our building. (Mt. Elliott and Davison area) They came back the next evening and hit the other building. So, needless to say, we've not had any relief for some time. Insurance is balking at installation of new units till we have a "plan" to safeguard new ones. It is now 91 degrees in our front office. We are leaving at noon before we all kill each other. Welcome to Detroit! These thieves then hit Fitzgerald plating, and numerous other businesses in the area. God bless Kwame!

As long as they don't mess with the AC units at Bev's Backstreet! It's hot enough in there already (if ya know what i mean).

like out of work hvac technicians even. much like many of the scrappers in this city, people like this need opportunities to use their skilled trades experience for good, not evil.

Soon enough they'll move out to the suburbs, and I can't say I blame them.

This kind of thievery causes the most spiteful rage within me. I feel there can be no punishment too great for such senseless crime.

I had asked my friend why her company was staying in Detroit when so many companies like her's was leaving and she said, "We want to support the city of Detroit and its revitalization!" Now, she says, "She doesn't know whether they can afford such high-minded idealism, anymore." Sad, very sad but maybe the city has not hit bottom, yet. I shudder to think what that might look like if this isn't bottom, yet!

Follow-up email to the initial email and report:

quote:

I own XXXXXXX Engineering, Davison & Mt. Elliott. Channel 7 news just had a feature about the party stores at 6 mile & Mt. Elliott. Marcus Coney Island got theirs (air conditioning units) stolen last night. Has to be some sort of a "ring" and a very good set up for someone, I hope that someone has crotch itch for the next 7 years for doing this!

When the cop came to take the report, he told us he hasn't had a partner in 6 years, and since they've closed some precincts, the 11th Precinct now stretches from 8 Mile & Woodward, down to the river, east past Van Dyke to include Belle Isle, and back up again to 8 mile. Nice eh? And if I were that cop, I sure wouldn't put my life on the line for a city like this. And, let’s talk street lights. It’s pitch black from around six mile all the way to 8 mile. Mound is in almost complete darkness at night. That's why I don't stick around there too long. Does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. We’re going to get out of here as soon as we can!

The thing I find interesting in this story is the matter of commercial insurance, which is, I'm guessing, overpriced in the C of D due to risk aversion by major issuers.

Does anyone think it would be worthwhile for the City to underwrite policies for businesses to help keep them in Detroit? If the operation loses money, at least the businesses save some $$$ relative to today's risk-averse premiums - and if it runs a profit, the businesses have the satisfaction of knowing that the money will help to finance that "revitalization" that Livedog2's friend is supporting.

Actuarially naïve in Ottawa.

The city does not need to take on any more risks...

There are a lot of legit insurance claims etc... but with that kind of backing, I am sure that number would drop and the fraud claims rise.

Seeing how this appears to be an ongoing problem, has anyone thought about having undercover police monitor the buildings in the area and then nabbing the bastards?

it would be interesting to see if it's really scrappers at work OR hvac contractor(s) looking for extra profit - honestly - how many businesses climb up on the roof to see if their recently installed unit is new? and how many go for a price break with a used unit?

It's obviously the company's fault. They were naive enough to leave their equipment on their roof; they were just asking for it to get stolen.

Did they take even baby steps to protect their property? Was barbed wire on their roof?

Hamsteve, I hope your post is sarcasm at it's finest.

Once again Detroit shows that the parasites are really running things. No wonder the city can't get ahead.

Not that it excuses it, but this hardly just a Detroit issue...

In fact, a search reveals lots of similar stories of air conditioner theft:

Interestingly enough it is usually not the residents of the city who commit such crimes inside the city. Same goes with the majority of the illegal dumping.

Like it or not Detroit is just like a carcass on the savannah. It stinks, is rotten and is waiting for the scavengers to descend on her to pick her bones clean. It’s the way nature cleans the countryside to make way for the new. The problem is it’s going to really get bad before it’s all cleared away to start over with the new. I shudder to think how bad it can/will get!

Yes, during the Vietnam War 1964-68! We were up near Chu Lai when I got a copy of the Stars and Stripes, I think it was August of 1967, with a picture of a map of my neigborhood in Detroit with tanks at the end of my street at Davison and Gallagher. When I got back I couldn't believe the devastation I saw in the aftermath of the riots. I think that was pretty bad but I don't think that will happen again because the rioters are the ones that run the city now. And, as they say, "You don't shit in your own mess kit!"

I'm not too sure that there's a rock bottom for the city. I think it's more that each neighborhood or area has its own rock bottom. Some areas have remained stable throughout the last 50 years, while other areas fell and are coming back up. The urban prairie continues to spread in still other areas.

That seems to be the most sensible assessment of the landscape of Detroit, Hamtramck_steve. I think you are absolutely right

quote:

"that each neighborhood or area has its own rock bottom. Some areas have remained stable throughout the last 50 years, while other areas fell and are coming back up."
