The Greektown parking garage has been completely demolished. As of yesterday, they were working on the apartment building facing I-375 and Monroe. Very strange to see such a void in the city scape. |

Not that strange, Bibs, this is Detroit. No, actually you do have a point because Greektown is one area where you are used to having a sense of enclosure. Having a high-rise with ground level retail will be so much better, and will effectively add a block to the Greektown district. |

I for one am fired up about the Greektown development.......but what about some infill development in those tacky small parking lots along the stretch; places were individual small rowhouse/brownstone size buildings were demolished. They only fit 10 cars, so it would be nicer to have a built out space for retail/restaurants there. This would make the stretch much more complete. It looks patchy as is. I cannot imagine this being a huge project……..just some infill of new buildings that look older to complement the street………maybe even a condo or two on floor 3 or 4; nothing higher. Pics? Are you serious? I'll use my imagination on this one. It probably looks like any other pile of rubble. It's Detroit, you should be familiar with the sight. |

I think Bibs is refering to the strangeness of it because for so many years you'd get off the Lafayette or Madison exit and drive by that apartment complex and then park in that perpetually run down parking ramp. I don't think anyone is mourning the loss of the two buildings. What's being proposed is far better than what was there. However there will definately be a different feel to Greektown with the demo and then new construction. Where will the street musicians play? The guitar guy has a monopoly on the old school building spot. Not too many other places you can play without getting shooed away. |

That place was a hell hole! I parked there for 5 years and had my car broken into twice! Not to mention all the pee and poop I had to walk thru everyday. YUCK!!! |

LOL Yeah. Nothing like welcoming all those greektown visitors with the smell of piss in the stairwells. The only thing I liked about that ramp was that I got free parking when I validated it at the Casino. |

The apartment building looks pretty cool right now...all lit up and they are spraying water on it as they are knocking bits down. Just drove by on the way home from InZer0 in Royal Oak (anyone go?) I'm glad to see that ugly apartment building go, although I wonder where the tenants, whom I always imagined were poor elderly, were shuttled off to. Also...a little scared of the multi-colored, foam brick and cornice, false glass, huge porte cochere with long car lines, lit for day all night CASINO. Oh well...such are our options in the D. |

One thing I have noticed since the demo started: the surface parking have begun to fill up again. A lot of those lots were much more empty after Greektown finished its valet garage on Beaubien. I'm guessing that will continue until the new hotel with its 3,000-plus garage is finished. However, I think a lot of those surface lots will go back toward empty when the Greektown Hotel garage (and the Blue Cross gargae) go online. It might just help drive a few of those surface lot owners to build on them. Ah well, here's to hoping. |

Yeah let's hope...damn surface lots. I have a photo of Comerica Park taken from the Broderick Tower as my computer wallpaper right now, and I can't stand looking at that surface lot behind the GM fountain (btw. John R and Witheral on the same block as the Madison Bldg.) How long will it take to get a mixed use development there? Perhaps 5 or 6 townhouse units of 3-4 stories with rooftops overlooking the field, with storefronts along Madison behind them? That's my vision--I hope some bright developer will beat me to it because it will take a long time for me to accumulate the startup $$ for that. |

If my memory is correct, the parking garage attached to the new hotel will be adjacent to the freeway service drive. Being able to see the entrance to the parking garage from the freway exit will really help people find the hotel garage quickly and it may even cut down on congestion. I think the hotel will be at the other end of the site and kitty corner from the casino. |

Bvos, the musicians don't get shooed away ever....only the bums. Quinn, most of the residents were not elderly, just receiving some type of cheaper housing....Most of them moved to a place called the "Jeffersonian"...not familiar with it myself. Bibs is exactly correct, and I do believe it will open up many more parking spaces for customers of restaraunts and bars in the area. |

The displaced folks moved to the Jeffersonian? Wow! The Jeffersonian is that huge apartment tower that towers over the Manoogian Mansion neighborhood (not the River House Apts.). Those folks will have stunning riverfront views with balconies for each apartment. Don't feel too sorry for these displaced people! |

SS, to answer your question, in a word, No. We will be upgrading our kiosks that will check your play before allowing validation on your ticket. But never fear, the parking around the casino should get somewhat cheaper with the new-found over-abundance of parking. |

Gambling_man, are you saying that only those with "Greektown Casino Cards" will be validated in the future? As an incidental gambler, I don't have a registered gambling card at any of the Detroit casinos. Just wondering? |

Jeffersonian--if these are people on public assistance, that's kind of an upgrade. Jeffersonian is between Burns and McClellan near Berry Sub. Not to be confused with the older, terra-cotta colored Kean's across the street. |

Thanks for the info Gambling_man. Although the new policy may irk some customers (ones who don't have a card), I can see the reasoning behind it. Otherwise folks as far away as Lions and Tigers games would abuse the current system, get an easy to obtain validation, and have free parking to their sporting venue. I wonder if MGM Casino will have to institute a similar policy to discourage folks going to Lions or Tigers games, and getting free parking there? Or are they distant enough (like MotorCity casino) to not have this be a problem? |

E-Hemingway, the Greektown Casino garage (Atheneum Garage) will be strictly public parking, no validation. I suspect that during the day it will be mostly monthly parkers. MGM grand casino is building 5,100 PARKING SPOTS....I wrote this larger so anyone who wants to fault Greektown casino for building 3,000 will sit up and smell the proverbial coffee. |
