I am taking my girlfriend out for our 1 year anniversary and would like to go somewhere nice. I was thinking Andiamo or Seldom Blues. Went to Coach for Sweetest Day and it was alright but want something different. The scenery was awesome thats why I was thinking the above two. Anywhere else or even outside the D?

you are gonna get so many responses... so to help you filter them check out sites like www.metrotimes.com and see the reviews from them and actual customers.

As a girl, let me weigh in. :-)

I would suggest going somewhere not in the Ren Cen since you did that last time.

I would suggest Mosaic in Greektown or La Dolce Vita in NW Detroit.

no if and or buts about. for a nice evening out on the town, if you're willing to spend $10-20 each, try:

-Slow's (barbecue... but the best i've ever had - even though i'm VEGETARIAN!)

-Traffic Jam & Snug (american, but VERY GOOD american)

-New Hellas (greek - the best place in greek town, if you ask me)

-Cass Cafe (bit more studenty, but delicious... try the lentil walnut burger)

-Carmic Cafe (sp?) havn't been there, but i will go soon. I hear good things. + Pmardo & Chitaku from this board work there...

No, I took my parents there last night for their anniversary because that was where they wanted to go. (and as an aside, my dad took my mom to Picano's for their actual anniversary dinner)

Nice try though. :-)

Seldom Blues had great jazz music and a beautiful view of the river. The food was excellent, I was full after soup and salad.

Mosaic in Greektown was also good and very friendly staff. The crowd there seemed a little younger perhaps, more "hipster" (this forum made me hate that word!) The fondue was excellent!

Also, I am a huge fan of La Dolce Vita's patio dining!

what about Sweet Georgia Browns? Aren't they open again?
Karmic is in the Guardian Building and is mostly a lunch spot. Unless there is another Karmic.
What about Magnolia?

I really love La Dolce Vita too.

JT1 and I agree, AGAIN! *blech*

For Italian, Roma Cafe. Awesome... but for REALLY excellent Italian, go to Giavani's in SW Detroit.

Rattlesnake is excellent. Perhaps, even Atlas or Cuisine... Actually, Atlas is a personal favorite of mine.

grand city grille in the fisher building is great.
the congress is also a fancy favorite.
small plates is very nice, you could then go up to cliff bells for a night cap.

Magianno's (Italian) in Troy or Vincente's (Cuban) Downtown Detroit for great quality food. Expect to spend approx. 50 for two which isn't "that" bad especially for a special day.

I also suggest La Dolce Vita. I just took my girlfriend there for her birthday about a month ago, and it was excellent. Make sure to valet, parking is otherwise tricky. The patio dining is very nice.

Seldom Blues is great, though I thought it to be a bit overpriced. I also really like Andiamo Riverfront. Congress is nice, but a bit stuffy, and I've only had drinks there.

I'll second or third Mosaic.

I've never been disappointed at Atlas Global Bistro. I think their atmosphere is nice, even if the view isn't.

Slows or Balle Corcaigh, too, gotta give props to Corktown's bestest. (just had a Slows lunch today...still grinning)

Sit outside on the patio in the summer for Rattlesnake Club. One of the very few restaurants in Detroit not in the Ren Cen with a view of the river. This is one of the very best places in Detroit. Jimmy Schmidt is a master and and a link to the past: the long gone but stellar London Chop House, where he started out.

My suggestion for making it an entire day:

Book a room at a B&B or hotel. Pack a picnic (or go to Eastern Market and surprise your girlfiend with a picnic basket. Select your food at EM and pack a picnic together. Go to Belle Isle for a picnic.

After that head pack to the B&B/hotel for check in. Most places will have flowers, candles, etc and other stuff put out if you request (not certain about hotels but B&Bs certainly will)

Get unpacked and have a glass of wine at your room. Head out for a few drinks.

Find a place like Hillberry or Bostelle that is having a show appropiate for the occasion and get tickets in advance.

After the show go out for a nice dinner and follow it up with a bottle of wine at another place. As a suggestion for dinner I would recommend going to a place (if it is an option) that has the same type of cuisine as your first date. If you went to a run of the mill Italian place go to Roma or Marios. I think she would be pretty happy with the thought that you tried to work your first date into it.

If you think your girlfriend would like a handsome cab ride that is an option as well.

Have the room done up and go back and enjoy the rest of the evening.

I second the vote for Giovanni's...probably the best meal I've ever eaten!! But I haven't heard that they've reopened following a recent fire (here's their website with contact info: http://www.giovannisristorante .com/index.php).

We also go to the Roma Cafe for special occasions. Used to go to Lelli's when they were on Woodward, but have not tried their current location on Opdyke Rd. just north of the Silverdome.

I also recommend Peabody's at Woodward and Maple in Birmingham. It was very nice for our anniversary celebration.

If you want a truly great dining experience and want to stay within the city limits, there are really only 4 choices: The Whitney (have desert on the top floor, very nice), The Rattlesnake Club (the veal chop will melt in your mouth like butter), Giovanni's, or Cuisine (don't be afraid that you can't pronouce "foi gras", order it if it's on the menu) There are many other good restaurants in the D, but these are far and away the stars.

No one mentioned Bally Cork...it is still opened? RIGHT????

if my husband took me to Slow's and arranged for a booth...I would be very happy. The beer selection is top notch, the food is great and the atmosphere is FUN BABY! Some of the waiters provide just enough eye candy to make the ladies smile.

Went to Camerons steakhouse in Birmingham and wasn't impressed. Waited 15 mins for someone to wait on us. When I called and made reservations I asked for the steakhouse and they reserved me at the SEAFOOD place right next door under the same name. The comp'd the appetizer for the wait at least. The steak was very good buy a la carte. From now on we're going to places that I know is good and I'm going to get what I pay for. My 12oz filet was $34 with nothing else on the plate but some leaves. Guess thats what I get for not eating in Detroit like I originally wanted to!

For steaks, Mr. Paul's Chophouse in Roseville blows the doors off of Cameron's if you have to stay in the Burbs. Best Caesar salad on the planet as well.

One_shot: I have to ask...did you have a personal recommendation for Cameron's Steakhouse? If so, I hope you let that person know about your experience. If not, did you do any online research to look at their menu and prices, including the a la carte nature of their entrees? or to read any online reviews? I can't imagine trying such an expensive new place without doing that first.

If you really want a nice place, great food, great staff I would suggest Cuisine , right behind the Fisher Buildlng on Lothrop.

One_shot...I agree totally with Kathleen. What made you choose Cameron's after we gave you such a great choice of restaurants in Detroit? You could have chosen any one of our recommendations and had a truly unique, memorable meal.

I do apologize. It was a recommendation from a friend and he has yet to be informed of my experience. I called him on La Dolce since he was there and he said to go to Camerons as it was better. I'll listen to people that really know next time. I think im gonna go for La Dolce or Roma.

Roma is awesome. I feel like I have stepped back in time and all the waiters look like they are in the mob. If it's your birthday, tell the singing waiter... he'll sing Happy Birthday in a very cool Operetic voice. *sigh* loooove that place.

Baile Corcaigh in Corktown!
The Irish aren't normally known for their cuisine, but all of their stuff is very flavorful... even the veggies are soaked in a wonderful broth, making them tender and delicious. Even if you just get a traditional corned beef and cabbage, it really is divine. And excellent desserts too, might I add. It's a charming place and not just some pub food.
