http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060810/NEW S01/608100336/1003/NEWS

Did Free Press columnist Desiree Cooper write an article critical of Coleman Young Jr because of:

a) genuine concern over his inexperience in winning his primary election.

b) her husband (Melvin Butch Hollowell) works for Mayor Kilpatrick, and Kilpatrick views Young Jr. as a threat to KK's future (as well as that of his family running for future office).

c) Both A and B.

d) Neither A nor B.

You're sounding like a straight up bitch right about now. I bet your favorite words are "I heard that".

You're reaching for straws, here, Metro. But, that's nothing new.

It does seem like there could be better things to write about. But go for the cheap shot instead.
It's not like this doesn't happen all the time. I'd say give the guy his one term and then rip him if he hasn't done anything but skate on the old man's name.

Reaching for straws? Desiree Cooper shouldn't be writing about city politics period, with her husband involved up to his eyebrows.

Maybe she should write about the hookers on Woodward between 7 and 8 mile.

How does the subject of Desiree's column have anything to do wtih her husband?

And isn't Coleman Young Jr. inexperienced?

Haven't we learned a lesson about electing inexperienced people yet?

I would say A.

Desiree Cooper has always struck me as a pretty fair writer. I never did consider the implications of her husbands standing but I figure she would be best not to start political fights on her husbands behalf given the whole hooker thing from a year or two back.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she wonders about his ability. I also believe that his district will cover her neighborhood so it makes it more valid of an article IMO.

Some of the responses are crazy. I am not the biggest Metro fan but the question was posed with no input/opinion from Metro. He asked a question and the reasonable response is to answer and support your answer. If he followed up with something you disagree with then respond accordingly but it was a simple question with an opportunity to state your belief of why she wrote the article.

Thanks to some of the usual Kilpatrick apologists and/or people who will take the exact opposite stance on a particular subject depending on the poster (in order to have an argument).

Keep in mind that the "usual rules" don't apply when someone sees a threat to their livlihood and feels the need to protect it.

Now for my OPINION: (C) Both A and B

How much of my time has been wasted reading your posts with your kneejerk reactions to certain posters?

In journalism, the appearance of a conflict of interest is enough, it doesn't matter how "fair" you think a writer may be.

I don't want Mrs. George Bush covering the November elections.

I much preferred the columns of Susan Watson, whose columnist slot Desiree took.

What position does Hollowell have in the Kilpatrick administration? As a lawyer in a private firm, he has performed legal services in the past on election issues for Kilpatrick's campaign committee. Has he recently received some kind of political appointment? If not, it seems kind of tenuous to be describing a private practice lawyer hired by the mayor as "working for" the him.

Hollowell also received Kilpatrick backing and support during his statewide office run.

Hollowell receives Kilpatrick backing and support for his private business ventures in the city.

Hollowell also allegedly received help from the Kilpatrick Administration in ultimately having his solicitation of prostitution charges dropped.

Just because there isn't an actual political appointment doesn't mean there aren't significant ties.

So on the contrary, it seems kind of tenuous to try to disassociate their working relationship and thus conflict of interest when his wife writes an article critical of an up-and-coming rival.

Well, Coleman A. Young Jr. will not be mayor of Detroit soon.
