Here is today's P.D.J.

Anyone know how to reference lot numbers to street addresses?

Excellent work AIW! Thats the first time I've ever actually seen blueprints for a 'Detroit Bungalow'; though I've been in many.

I even own one! My house is set up very similar to this drawing (though in reverse, with smaller living room, no foyer, but a big bay window.

There is no relationship between lot number and street address. Street addresses have changed several times over the course of the City's history.

I used to live in one of those Detroit Bungalows and so did my relatives. It was in the same design as the blueprints. My Detroit bungalow was woodframe shingle, no siding. It had a a Living room, Nook, (dining area) Kitchen, stairs to the side door and basement Hallway with a closet, Bathroom, 2 Bedrooms and stairs to the upstairs bedroom.

Not just Detroit has oodles of woodframe and brick bungalows. The most surrounding suburbs had them, too.

The 1930 U.S. Census for Detroit shows Charles F. Graulich living at the address shown on the blueprint, 14268 Mapleridge. He is 37 years old and born in Michigan. His occupation is stated as "Architect, Own office". His wife, Dolly, a French-Canadian, is two years older than him, and they have two children; Charles, 12; and Adele, 10.

I can't find either Charles on the Social Security Death Index, but Dolly Graulich is listed. She died March 1975, age 85, in Roseville. Kind of fun tracing folks down.

Do a keyword search on "Lumpkin" at the Virtual Motor City site. IIRC, these were built near State Fair & Lumpkin. Is there any reference to a subdivision name?

Mikem, I looked at the VMC and all there is are 10 houses built by Public Works.

None of the layouts match the blueprints.

AIW, go to the cities tax site:
http://www.detroitmi.gov/eGov/ PropertyTax/disclaimer.aspx

Click the accept button at the bottom of the page.

Do a search on State Fair. Pick a parcel number. The sub, lot and plat numbers are included in the legal description at the bottom of the tax record. I'm not sure if they are the lot numbers you're looking for.

Danny, your bungalows are later than the California bungalows of the period 1905-25.
These houses were more in wood frame construction with large porches, battered porch posts, figure eight brackets and exposed roof rafters.

Your pictures are great, but from the period, 1940-60s. Thanks for the shots.

jjaba.
