So....I just got engaged a few weeks ago. Does anyone have any ideas for a truly unique place (no DYC, DAC, Whitney, etc) to have the engagement party? This will just be close family and the wedding party - probably around 30 people.

I was thinking the Guarding Building but I don't know if they can do alcohol, and I don't know if my family would be down for the veggie food.

It will probably be in late November. I'd really appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

One of the nicest wedding receptions I've ever attended was in the Guardian Building. And there was plenty of liquor.

Had an impromptu engagement party at the Dakota Inn Rathskeller for about 20 people. A good time for all. Give it high marks if you're looking for something more informal.

Sorry to hear..., oops I mean Congrats Jfried!

You're not stuck with the veggie place at the Guardian. The Rowland Cafe is available and you'd probably be able get an outside caterer if you wanted. Most restaurants/bars that already have a liquor license are able to provide bar service as a caterer through their existing liquor license. That might be one way to approach the liquor issue.

Here's some other ideas from a wedding issue of Model D:

http://www.modeldmedia.com/fea tures/wedding42.aspx

You might check into the Conservatory on Belle Isle. Due to renovations they may or may not be available in November.

The Main Branch Library has some very cool rooms that might be available as does the DIA. The McGregor Conference Center on WSU's campus is very cool if you like Modernism.

The Fisher Building might also be a possibility. Some very cool nooks and cranny's there.

I second Crew's ideas of the Masonic Temple (a multitude of possibilities there) and the Max.

Yes, the Masonic Temple has rooms that fit every size a group may wish for.

I agree with the guardian building. Also, I've been to an engagement party (that was a surprise) at the Ferry Street Inns...he rented a whole house. It was really quite wonderful!

May want to try to go with a reception that is near a hotel. You don't want to feel guilty if a guest leaves drunk and gets arrested or in an accident.

FYI - You have another e-mail coming from me.

Don't you have to be a member in order to have a reception at some of these places, such as:
DYC
DAC
Detroit Club

And was this one a joke? It would be interesting none the less.

The Scarab Club is available for rent, also. The garden would be nice, but Im guessing it would be a little cold in November. They rent both levels...I have seen the main gallery turned into an engagement party setting and it was quite nice.

We had an event at the Science Center and there was also some sort of wedding or reception going on at the same time. I think that would be a cool place to have a party.

There is a great vacant lot on second and cass, a party store near by, a church on the opposite corner, some chicken up the block. Lot's of homeless and some hookers to liven up your wedding party. Congrats!

Scarab club... too fancy.

but seriously, it should be a place that has a special meaning to you and your significant other, not just because it is cool or location. is there someplace in detroit that is really special or symbolic for both of you? go with that.

For something truly uniquely Detoit you could have a reception at the 555 Gallery or the 4731 Building. Both very cool places and you would likely have the run of the place.

I can set up a folding table and chairs in my garage for you and put a port-a-potty in the driveway. Thats unique as no one has ever had an engagement party in my garage before. Would your family like Faygo?
