I was talking to a client who left Detroit in 1990 (lives in Florida). We were discussing the lack of retail here. You all know the drill.

That led us to a conversation about Plum Street. A bit before my time so I want to know more. I saw a very interesting piece in the News through a Soulful Detroit link:

http://info.detnews.com/histor y/story/index.cfm?id=136&categ ory=locations

Anyone have any recent thoughts to share? What's the neighborhood like now?

P.S. DetroitYes Forum search turned up no results.

Yes... it is one massive MGM Grand Detroit $750 million permanent casino construction site with buildings rising, and cranes & construction equipment everywhere!

There is no more neighborhood, it's all under the construction for MGM.

Thanks for the great pic Ramcharger! Nice to see what it the construction site looks like. The lower floors of the hotel tower are easy to spot in the lower right of the pic. It has the usual open "V" shape that is common in Las Vegas.

And we can easily see where any future hotel exansion will take place (making the hotel building a 3 pointed star).

What ever happened to Fiona's Tea House?

Last I heard there were attempts to have the house moved to Corktown; did the little place succomb to the bulldozer?

Detroitnerd, What a great post.

I guess I totally forgot about the little house.

I use to think about what a weird place to live that would be.

I would love to see a beautiful large format landscape shot of that little house in a sea of parking.

I hope someone took some good photos of it before its demo.

Hey Lowell, I honestly didn't get these results when I used the search function for:

Plum Street Detroit
Plum Street
Plum St.
Plum & Fifth Streets

What did I do wrong?

I hear you sis. Not your fault. The search function is not the best. Even a search of plum doesn't yeild anything. I need to extend the Search DetroitYES to include atdetroit.net where the forum files are stored....

A lot of times you can do a google search. ie:
plum street+detroityes
That is a lot quicker and yields pretty good results. ie:
www.atdetroit.net/forum/messag es/41305/41307.html?1130114030

You can go to almost any party store in Dearborn for the hooka.

Anyone care to speculate on a thought? Plum Street was artificial. Did the Cass Corridor around Wayne State evolve naturally to come close to serving the same basic function?

Ya sure, you betcha. When high school teacher Robert Cobb and real estate developer Sherman Shapiro decided that Detroit needed a "arts community" and proceed to buy all the buildings between 4th and 5th, it's "real".
