Nice Job Ndavies! I hope you guys do an Open House for forumers (at least the nice ones!). I just love the entablature along the top, as well as the closed pendiment and the medallions. Albert Kahn really knew how to do details well. It is interesting to see in this picture how Kahn's sprawling First National Building nearly overpowers the entire block. |

Making mental note not to walk under that sign now. Last thing I need is to have some V come crashing down upon my noggin and ruining a perfectly good day. Damn funny though. |

Awesome...just went by and the Vinton is really starting to catch one's eye from up by Campus Martius. The finished product will be something to be proud of. |

I'm sure it's been mentioned previously, but when did the Vinton Building get the Vinton name?

The Vinton Bldg. might have had that name originally (1917). W. Hawkins Ferry gives no other name of it in his "The Legacy of Albert Kahn," and he generally gives original names if a building has been re-named. By the way, what's that stuff lining the cornice in the above photo? It looks like delicate iron tracery. It also resembles razor wire! But I'm not sure if that was even invented when the photo was taken, and even if it was, it certainly wouldn't have been on top of the building. |

I think it's decorative. Sort of like the stuff found on this building: http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.g ne?id=217439667&size=l Except the stuff on the Vinton is a bit more "delicate" looking. |

The Vinton building was originally built for the Vinton company. They were a large local construction company at the turn of the century. It was the original name on the building. The sign is in the original prints. It was removed when the bulding was sold to the Guaranty trust company in 1927. The building had a cast iron crown when it was built. The crown has long since been removed. |
