It seems that Rogers Penske’s concern for Detroit has evolved the way we had all hoped and pushed beyond the superbowl. With his work on bringing the grand prix back to Belle Isle, it seems his eyes are still set on helping the city pull itself out of the ashes. I would think that Penske would like to be mentioned in the same breath as the like of Peter Karmonos and others who have took a gamble on the city and made it a better place. If nothing more to buy into his ego; if he has one, I have never met the man……anyway, my question is….would Penske ever consider moving his corporation downtown? And if so, would that be a major event for Detroit, like a Compuware or Quicken (hoping). Would anyone know how many people Penske employees? If they are even looking or would be in the future to move?....I actually don’t even know where they are located, living out of town and all, but would be curious on the specs of the corporation. |

I am eager to hear everyone's speculations as to whether Penske would move his operations downtown. |

I thought the racing community hated racing on Belle Isle. How is Penske going to get around that major obstacle? |

I think a key is figuring out if Penske needs a suburban location for logistics purposes or not. For instance a major company owned by Penske is Penske Leasing, a truck leasing company. Does their current headquarters physically interface with the truck business? If so they'll likely need a suburban location or an industrial location in the city for the trucks to comfortably move around and be stored. Likewise the racing business. Will the race cars and related equipment need to be/get downtown on a regular basis? If so a suburban or industrial city location will also be needed since it's pretty difficult to manuver a race car hauling truck downtown. Now if the current headquarters is just a place for paper pushing, then there are not many reasons why Penske can't come downtown. |

This would be the IRL which is a different race series as the one who was there before (CART). Aside from that, the old track and track facilities were never conducive to good racing or a good racing environment. Ironically enough, the IRL was formed by Tony George in 1996 to cater to American racers and only race on ovals ala NASCAR...guess that didn't work out too well. Or maybe TG does whatever Penske tells him to do... |

I love going to the IRL race at MIS and do so every year. I'd rather it stay there or perhaps race there AND Belle Isle. MIS is a great place to see those open wheel car fly around the track. They make the NASCAR race I went to yesterday at MIS seem slow in comparison. |

I doubt there are many. Given what the company does, I think most of the staff is at remote locations (dealerships), rather than at Headquarters. (Message edited by sharmaal on August 21, 2006) |

Not to knock Penske's efforts in any way, shape, or form. His post-Super Bowl involvement in downtown Detroit is great. However is anyone else just a little pissed at ourselves because the big post-Super Bowl dividend project is paying people to clean up after ourselves? Maybe if we weren't such slobs (be it Detroit residents and/or suburbanites) the Clean Detroit resources could go to a better use. |

Why should we be pissed about something that is provided in other major city downtowns? |

He used to be a majority stock holder of Detroit-Diesel with GM in 1988, later bought out by Daimler-Chrysler in 2000, large factory on Telegraph near Plymouth Rd, Redford Twp. http://www.detroitdiesel.com/a bout/history.aspx I think he probably made some serious money on that deal. |

Good morning everyone. 1st time poster here on this wonderful site of knowledge, and history. I actually work for Roger Penske at one of his "metro Detroit" dealerships, and hope to fill in any knowledge that I may have. I also wanted to say that I get many great morning laughs by some of the posts on here. I use this site for many reasons, especially on the history of this great city. Unfortunately I live "cringe" in the suburbs. But I have spent many of my paychecks in Detroit. plus, I am also planning on buying a loft downtown. So I say good morning to all!!!!!! |

Roger made something like 400-500 MILLION in selling DDC to Chrysler. Penske has a newly built HQ in Troy. It is unlikely he would build or move downtown. |
