Let me orient this photo for you. This is the Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church Complex. I shot this standing in Russell St. and this is looking directly SE toward Canfield. In the top right hand background is a small piece of the church. What I need to know are what are the other two buildings called and what was located on the empty lot. I am trying to find out where the “old” Sweetest Heart of Mary School was located and to ID the other buildings.

Here's a picture of a school building of the incorrectly named "Sacred Heart of Mary" church. Based on the life and the size of the parish, I suspect there may have been other school building(s) of different eras and perhaps additional buildings (i.e., elementary school, high school)

I'm a little confused about your comment:

Are you saying that the name of the church is not Sweetest Heart of Mary?

Check out this link:
http://www.sweetestheartofmary .org/

Are you saying that the school's name was "Sacred Heart of Mary School"? Or, are you saying that the pictures at the link you provided were labeled incorrectly as "Sacred Heart of Mary?" Please clarify.

I think the parish's original Polish name was translated into English as both "Sacred Heart of Mary" and "Sweetest Heart of Mary". Over time, "Sweetest Heart" became the accepted English name.

The parish in my previous link is the same as the parish we today call "Sweetest Heart".

I hope this is less confusing.

Now that you've exhausted half of my vocabulary in Polish, here's the 1921 Sanborn map, confirming what McCarch posted. There were two SH of M listed in the map index, quite confusing.

(Damn Jarheads can't keep on topic. We're currently in DFD research mode.)

The Anton Dlugi House was located at 4455 Riopelle and according to “The USGENWEB Project” claims the oldest part of the house antedates 1886. Also, that “this house was the site of the first services for the Sweetest Heart of Mary parish in 1886 while its pastor, Rev. D. Kolasinski was in North Dakota from 1886-1888.”

I went to this area the other day to see if I could find any traces of the Dlugi House but not only could I not find a trace of the house but I couldn’t even find that part of Riopelle anymore.

I took a photo and here is what I did find by dead reckoning with the Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church in the background.
anton
I believe the spot where the fence is located is where the Dlugi House sat. It makes sense because the first services for the Sweetest Heart of Mary parish were held here and the church is visible in the photo. Of course this is looking south and slightly west. I have looked all over the web but cannot find a photo of the Dlugi House.

Does anyone out there have a photo of this historic Polish site, the Anton Dlugi House?

Can't help you with any info or photos, but looking at high resolution of the above map, that house was the third from Garfield (from the upper left ).

Just wanted to thank mccarch for the great Web link to old churches and schools of Detroit-interesting to chart their rise and sadly, their fall.

Thanks for pinpointing it on the Sanbron map above, Hornwrecker! Does the the Sanborn map also include the address all the time? And, what is the other number? A lot number or something?

Maybe I can get Mikem to look in his directories from back in the day and see who lived there at 4455 Riopelle at different times?

It's hard for me to believe that such a historical home was demolished without a trace!

The other numbers are from the old street numbering system. The 2 denotes two story, the F or R a private residence, the dashed lines overhanging unenclosed spaces, like porches, the X is probably where an entrance was.

4455 Riopelle map

You'd have to go to City Hall to find the lot #s, and prior tax history which should show when it was demoed.

FYI, Sweetest Heart is far from falling. We have a large congregation, not as big as in the past, but large for an iner-city parish.

The festival a few weeks ago was a success, and Fr. Mark's energy and hard work have ensured its continued survival for years to come.

Also, one of the old school buildings is located directly behind the church. It is boarded up, but there is interest in remodling it as a church social hall.

Livedog2 no, the building I'm referring to is the one you see from Canfield. Its right behind the church facing Canfield.

If I get a chance in the next day or so I will take a picture and post it.

I managed to find the house at 907 Riopelle on the 1889 Sanborn, except this time it is labeled as a 2 story school house. Interesting. Sorry, that was the western edge of the map, so no church grounds on it.

Off topic, but how do Eastsides pronounciate Riopelle? I don't ever think I've heard it used.

Thanks. I love French names, and the Eastside is full of 'em.

I was expecting the pronouciation to be much worse like "RIO-Peli."

Eastsiders use this as means of spotting the Westsiders, and burst into laughter when an out of towner tries to pronounce them.

I'm ever thankful that Freud and Goethe don't intersect.

It's funny, I spent my first year on the Eastside (Melbourne & John R./Brush), but know very little about it. My mom was from the Westside (Dexter/Linwood) and my dad from the Eastside, but we later moved to 12th and Clairmount.

Note to Eastsiders, past and present: DO NOT give the proper pronunciations for those two streets (Freud & Goethe) to others, upon penalty of dire consequences, to be determined later.
