I've not been downtown in a few weeks, but I went down tonight, and it looks like someone has gotten into the David Whitney and tagged "AMERIKU" or something like that across the front windows. Glad to know yet another until-now well-preserved building is apparently continuing to fall victim to graffiti. Also, good to see that nearly every window in the Broderick is covered, a la United Artists, but without the artistic merit.

On another note, what the hell was going on downtown tonight that Olympia thinks they can charge $30 for parking in their surface lots? That's outrageous, you can valet in NYC for less.

Noticed the increased parking downtown, too. It's much heavier for a non-sports/festival weekend. I think this might have something to do with it.

It was the hoedown all over again on Saturday night. Monster trucks and ten gallon hats were everywhere tailgating starting at 1:30.

Anyone notice the Wide Open Assholes at work in the Broderick? (Or maybe whitney) I'll look again once I get home. They painted their name in the windows across the Park Side of the building at about the 5th or 6th floor.

These kids annoy the hell out of me.

If you are a respectful urban explorer out there, you need to watch out. People like this give the rest of us a bad name, and raise the stakes for getting caught inside one of these things.

It is one thing to take photos, and explore. It is another to deface property and treat buildings as if they are your personal billboard.

i dont know what else to say to you guys, but we didnt paint that. take it for what it is. thats been there for a week and a half or so. we know one guy who does some painting, but other than that, you can look on our site, were pretty serious about detroit and its landscape. even if you dont like our site, we spend alot of time documenting the city and its transformation. we do not spend all of our time spray painting buildings. i dont know how well it serves us- but we are not kids- we may act like it once in awhile, but we are all working adults. we get negative feedback or comments, and sometimes we play along, and ride with it. look on our site- we dont have any of that david whitney roof tagging on our site. why? because it wasnt there when we were there. a couple of years ago, someone tagged our name on the UA and painted some choice words about those guys at forgotten michigan. we cleared it up with them and they actually found out who did it. those guys are our friends, and weve been out with them before, theyve never seen us paint anything, because we dont. the one person we know that paints has a tagging name, we have gone out with him more than once. here and there he has painted our logo, and the quality of that paint job is far superior than that crap on the whitney or the broderick. the few places he has painted are still out there. vandalism or whatever we call it is wrong, we all know that, and hanging with a guy who paints is wrong as well. but this constant name calling and the blame game is getting old. i personally am a grown man- i like to photograph our city- i work- i own a small business, and my family still lives in detroit. all of us are a bunch of smart asses, but we are not destructive kids with cameras and paint. if you guys keep pressing the issue without knowing the facts, what are we supposed to do? well, something has to get done. if someone tagged detroityes all over the city.....does that mean you guys did it? no! but it could happen.

my friends and i were in downtown that night... we hated it. we were in the car for two hours before we could find decent parking.

our downtown is a sea of parking garages and spaces... we need mass transit.

If downtown is a sea of parking garages and spaces, why did it take you 2 hours to find a parking spot? I rarely have a problem parking down there.

My mom said that parking is different. It used to be good and now it's bad. My grandma said it, too.

I was there too. Finding a parking spot wasn't a problem around 6:00PM. The problem is that most lots were charging $20-30. After 30 minutes of cruising around looking for a spot, I settled on the Opera House structure for $15. Had to go all the way to the top. Other than that, the city was vibrant and full of life. Had a great time, especially at Campus Martius.

Why doesn't the people mover go to Royal Oak? They should extend it. That's where all the bars and restaurants are.

I wish it did. That way Wide Open Detroit could ride to Royal Oak, tag everything there and then deny they did it and blame it on someone else.

Cool! Tell us where, and we can paint a bunch of really weak tags there like you guys do all over Detroit's buildings.

Aren't there a fair amount of 'Greed' tags in Detroit. I hope that Kym Worthy or DPD give ROPD a call.

Glad that guy got caught in RO. Some of his crappy tags were even misspelled and looked as bad as the wideopendetroit tags.
Don't worry, a case is building against the wideopendetroit boys.

I was under the impression that Detroit has open season on taggers. That if you see them tagging that you are completely in the right to shoot them, as their vandalism has a direct effect on our quality of life. Was I mistaken?

Perhaps somebody could toss a pair of Cartiers at the scene of the crime, so it would be considered justifiable by Detroit standards.

I hope this isn't the downfall of yet another beautiful Detroit landmark.

I took this earlier this evening...

Too bad an identical building like the David Whitney Building could not have been built where the Broderick Tower and Madison Theater are located. It would have been a great entrance way to lower Woodward.

Sorry, Buddyinrichmond, I can't get to every thread on this forum because it's hard to keep up if you let a day or two go by without reading this forum. Besides, it was a comment I've always wanted to make.

Toolbox, don't be upset because you tend to do everything prematurely. Just accept that some of us are better at taking our time doing things than others.:-)

Right. I always forget that the one who gets their two cents in on every thread wins.

Anyhow, keeping on the subject I always thought it was too bad an identical building like the Broderick Tower could not have been built where the David Whitney Building is located. It would have been a great entrance way to lower Woodward.

No, I think Buddyincrichmond wants to pull you back to planet earth and post about something more serious in this thread rather than dreaming about Detroit having multiple David Whitney Buildings or something to that extent.

Back on topic....

There is more damage to the skylight and there has also been scapping as of recently. The police were informed and the owner was called and some extra actions were taken to secure the building against future damage.

Discussion continues....

Wolverine, why don't you and your buddy Buddyinrichmond get a room? Maybe you'd prefer a little Buddyinwolverine since you feel that you have to speak up for him. Let him fight his own battles, Wolverine, and keep your nose out of other people's business. Speaking of a Johnny-come-lately. Please.
