I just ran across this in the Freep. It's corny in that it's a publicity stunt for McDonald's and their still crappy "premium" coffee. Either way should be a cool thing for Detroit. It's definately out of the ordinary! http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=2006608270583 |

Info from Wikipedia to shed some light on Toolbox's comment: "Karl [Wallenda] developed some of the most amazing acts like the seven-person chair pyramid. They continued performing those acts until 1962. That year, while performing at Detroit, Michigan, the front man on the wire faltered and the pyramid collapsed. Three men fell to the ground, killing two of them (Richard Faughnan, Wallenda's son-in-law, and nephew Dieter Schepp). Karl injured his pelvis, and his adopted son, Mario, was paralyzed from the waist down." |

Karl didn't fare too well in Puerto Rico, either. Always thought these circus acts were the height of stupidity. Humbug. |

The event brought out a lot of people like myself. Martin Luther King Jr., High School's marching band was there and played some tunes. Free McDonald's coffee and coupons were pass out. A safety net was used. Watching the guy and young woman go up the incline to get back to the end of the wire appeared to be a challenge. Also, the young woman did have a little trouble at the end which caused her to have to wait for help for about 10 minutes before she could come down. It did provide for some tense moments. |

I am told her trouble was because his crain would not work, which he needed to come up and take her balance stick from her. Eventually, they got it working right. |

Everything you wanted to know about the Wallenda family and their highwire act "The Flying Wallendas"....http://www.wallenda.com/index. html It appears that their only tie to Detroit is the disaster that occurred during a 1962 performance at the State Fair Coliseum, killing two of the troupe and seriously injuring another. |

Per the Freep article... Nikolas, 27, and Lijana, 29, seventh-generation brother and sister duo of the legendary Wallendas. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060830/NEW S99/60830024 http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060831/NEW S01/608310419/1003 |

Wow. The Freep's pictures are not that great. When I was down there, some bigwig from McD asked me if I was with the media. Guess answering yes wouldn't have improved the viewpoints. By the way, two McD execs were overheard at Slows discussing the new Campus Martius McDonalds. I am not kidding. That's the real reason the suits were down there. |

The first thing Lijana did upon reaching the ground was to change her shoes. Off came the black tightrope-walking slippers and on went a pair of very high-heeled yellow pumps. |
