I'm told that this is the busiest National City branch in the nation.

GOD I want to sneak up there one night and cut off those awful hanging lights. Anyone got a cherry picker I can borrow?

Cool pic. I wonder what bank it was originally.

1953, look at the blowup of the front entrance. Someone gratuitiously added some modern lighting in the early 1970's, I'd guess. It looks ridiculous.

Judging by the sleek, modern look of the lights I'd say they're definately original, vintage light fixtures!

Aiw, do you know the year the building was built? It seems the Bank of Commerce logo was added to the facade at a later date. Either it replaced the previous bank name/logo or it was the only "renovation" project ever done in the 60s-80s era that actually respected the architecture of the building.

I would guess 1923-27 would be a safe range for construction.

I too have a feeling the bc logo was a later addition as well. As for the lights, I think the 1970's were a very bad time, and right for the lighting addition

Nice new header on IM.com Andrew!

There is a painting of mine in that bank from back in the 80's when as Bank of Commerce they sponsored art competitions.

One of the problems with the lights is one needs a new shade. There appear to be 5 lights, and the one on the far right as you look at the building is missing a shade. Looks unbalanced the way it is now.....

There are four lights.

Aiw, the new page layout is rendering goofy for me in Firefox 1.5.-. The left menu is covering the left side of the photos by about 10%.

The links on the top three categories cover, then the links are OK until after the Detroit Wonk one, the cover the photo after it.

Itsjeff...I generally agree with you that those lights stink. Still, I wouldn't threaten acts of vandalism against a functioning business at the urban core of our region. I'd write a letter instead.
