And when I think of Alonzo
He was king around the bay
He'd come sporting and flashing
Hearts would drift away

Could be he had a dream
Came upon the scene where the
Lamb and lion play
How could he start to school her
Or rule her with feet of sand and clay

Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven
Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven
Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven
Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven

Could be he had a dream
Came upon the scene where the
Lamb and lion play
How could he start to school her
Or rule her with feet of sand and clay

Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven
Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven
Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven
Alonzo declared that he must
Reach to heaven - for heaven

Don't you know Alonzo put
Out his hand one day
Don't you know Alonzo
lifted up his head to pray

So good for you, my dear Alonzo
So good for you, my dear Alonzo
So good for you, my dear Alonzo
So good for you, my dear Alonzo

Warm your heart
So warm the sun
Warm your soul

Welcome, Alonzo
So good to see you
Welcome, Alonzo

Ah ha, you corrupt, leech.
Blaming others, while you swindle impoverished black Detroiters with taxes for the management of Detroit, but instead going to you, your family and your friend's pockets.

You're nothing but a rip-off, scam artist, cheat. Instead of representing the people of Detroit, you steal from them.
Now you get what you have coming.

Gotta love this from the Freep article:

"Ku Klux Klan," Bates, 66, muttered several times after the verdict.

He didn't mutter "ku klux klan" repeatedly. He looked at the rows of federal agents in the gallery and said, "If it weren't for the dark suits, it'd be a klan rally."

Considering how all of the people he supposedly "helped" fessed up to wrong doing, how in the world did he think he was going to escape any of this dirty laundry? And muttering the Klan in this just speaks of his blatant disregard for the jury (if that's who he was grumbling about)- fine, disagree with them but to call them the Klan speaks of desperation and futility.

None of you are thinking of ~the children~ in your glee.

I am wondering how they are going to break it to the little ones?

Has anyone started a pool on how long the name lasts?

Bates was on the school board...wonder how many millions he swindled from DPS? Maybe that is why DPS is in the state it is now...paying phantom workers.

Think they'd have a better reputation if they changed Bates Academy name to Norman Bates Academy!

Lowell, as an ex-husband of a Detroit school teacher, I can say it will be a non-issue.

When it comes to schools, all the parents see is "Is the teacher white or black".

I hate to say it, but the most vocal parents hate teachers who happen to be white.

That said, I applaude all teachers who teach in DPS, regardless of race. They are the KEY to OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE...

GOD BLESS DET. TEACHERS, Caus we all know NO-ONE ELSE DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Justice finally prevails. Bates finally got what was due. I hope they go after more corrupt Detroit politicians.

Lonnie's comments about the Klan shows how desparate he is as well as how incompetent he's always been. One more racist bastard down, a ton to go.

DING DING DING Detroitteacher!!! Bates said he traveled first class to be a role model for students...

what is sad about this is that this man ACTUALLY believes he was railroaded. He will not take responsibility. We need to mail him letters to his home with quotes or sayings about responsibility. This man is foolish.

It just cheeses me that teachers and kids have to go through all this nonsense of no money for anything in DPS yet they travel first class, have phantom employees, live in luxury with their gorgeous office furniture (and I don't have enough desks for my kids), etc. I say take a look into everyone's records and books from back then and find out where all the schoolkids' money went!!

In the black church, even though it is still spelled "amen", it's frequently pronounced as aman. Phonetically this is kind of what it would likely look like: "Aaaaaamaaan church! Church say aaaamaaan!"

And "Gratiot" has its own odd pronounciation. We should still spell it correctly.

This conviction will give DPS an out in terms of changing the schools name. DPS for years have been upset with the way he meddled in the day-to-day affairs of the school. They probably will never name a school after a local person until that person has deceased.

They should rename it in honor of Damon Keith, since they closed the elementary school named after him.

They should name it after Nelson Mandela, a symbol of excellence:
