Casino Windsor will begin offering sports betting next Friday -- marking the first time Metro Detroiters will have access to live sports wagering.

Looking to tap the sports and gambling passions of its American neighbors, the riverfront casino is opening a multimillion-dollar, 170-seat sports lounge, where gamblers can wager on pro football, basketball, hockey and baseball games, as well as college football and basketball.

Finally, a real reason to cross the border that does not involve neaked chicks.

That is absolutely fantastic news.

Now I can save the hassle of the bookie.

My understanding is that sports books aren't huge money makers for casinos, but if they do this right it will be an enormous draw.

I think in this case it's not about being a money maker, but being something different from your competiton. Also the average gambler, will probably go gamble on sports, and gamble on other table games and slots too...

I think it will be a massive attraction.

I agree with Aiw, this will be huge. I know a lot of local folks who bet on sports through underground books. The ability to bet legally on sports as well as do so in a very attractive and comfortable place shown in the pictures will be a boon for Casino Windsor. It will definately help create a distinction from the three Detroit casinos.

Smart move on their part.

Windsor is the perfect place to have sports betting for me.

It's close enough for me to bet on a game once in a while, but not close enough for me to become addicted to it.

IMO, I doubt you'll see sports betting in Detroit anytime soon.......At this point, I think its only legal in vegas and the US government likes it that way. The major sports leagues also seem very uncomfortable with the idea (hence no team in Vegas).

Rusty, I was being facetious. However, the lobbying and whining will start.

That being said, Ontario does allow betting on pro sports and has teams in the NBA, MLB, and NHL. I believe there was some controversy with the NBA and the then new Toronto franchise when sports betting was legalized in Ontario. Someone else may know the details.

Are there free alcholic drinks at the Windsor Casio?

I can't believe drinks are full price at the ones here!

Drinks are not free at the Las Vegas sports books. Well, very few anyway and thats only if you make sporting wagers. I doubt they will be in Windsor. And before you guys get yourselves too excited about this news, keep in mind it will be the same as their Sports Select gambling they have already everywhere in Canada. You cannot just make a single wager on a game. You MUST make at least a 3 team parlay on a sporting ticket. Picking one winner is difficult enough to win. Picking 3 winners is so slanted towards the house that I doubt once the initial boom is over that there will be as much interest. It's very simular to the illigal football cards that are distributed on the streets. The player barely stands a chance at coming home with any money in their pocket.

When casino gambling came to Detroit, the state rules and regulations forbids free drinks. So it's not that the Detroit casinos are cheap... they are forbidden to do so.

I would also tend to think that sports betters probably smoke... now forbidden at Casino Windsor.

The casinos do not make their money on sports books or even table games. Most of the money is made from the slots!! Even though there are penny, nickle, dime and quarter slots. The bulk of the money is from the one armed bandit...make that multi armed buttons.....

Free drinks to bettors in Las Vegas sports books are a staple, contrary to what Bushay says. Of course, you toke the cocktail waitress, so it's nearly a wash.

FWIW, the Vegas sports books do not give a line or take bets on UNLV sports. I think it's a state statute, as I recall. Should the Detroit casinos ever get approved for sports betting, I'd expect bans on betting the Lions, Tigers, etc., would result. And that would likely send Detroiters over to Windsor, anyway.

On the other hand, who in their right mind would want to bet on the Lions?

I wouldnt expect sports betting at Motorcity Casino, even if the Mrs. technically owns the casisno, as long as Ilitch is in control of the Wings/Tigers

Im sorry Ray but you are incorrect. Very few sports books pass out free drinks anymore. And the one's that do, USUALLY require you to show them a drink ticket that are passed out while making a wager. I'm not saying all. Just most. If you forget to ask for a drink ticket...good luck getting a drink without paying. They do this to keep the local riff raff from plopping their butt in their chairs and spending the day watching the games when some higher rollers could be spending money doing the same. Same as the cheap food that USED to be a staple in LV. It's just not like it used to be.

Bushay, stay off of the strip. Hit the locals places, like the various Station Casinos or the Boyd group (Southcoast, Orleans, etc.) The cocktail waitress won't even ask you for a bet slip. Unless you're looking like a downtown Detroit homeless person, that is.

I spent a delightful morning just the other day in the Fiesta Henderson Sports and Race Book, and had the cocktail gal asking if I want a drink every 15 minutes. (I accepted several times...black coffee!) I bet two exactas for a buck a ticket, by the way. Nope, lost. I'm a sucker for those 50-1 longshots. :-)

Ray, you must spend alot of time in casinos or have worked at one.....no one else would use the word "toke" instead of "tip".

PS, Sports Books are typically not a big money-winner for the casino. They cost alot of money to build, maintaing, and the hold for the casino is relatively low (4-5% or so). Now, being the ONLY sportsbook in a rather large metropolitan area may change that.....we shall see.

Gambling-man, I moved here to southern Nevada in 1984 after I retired from the DPD so, yeah, I've spent a few hours in the joints here. Never worked in one, though.

Bobj, hard-earned money gets squandered in many ways. I don't go to concerts, movies, or play golf, so spending a few bucks on casino entertainment is a no-brainer for me. All depends on the individual.

I think this is part of Casino Windsor's Operation Diet Riot plan to destroy Detroit like the Nazi's tried to destroy the European Jewry. Casino Windsor hates Detroit. Hopefully someone can organize a supper club to protest this tragic injustice.

Meanwhile anyone know what to do about this Oakland-Denver game? I like the Raiders but you can't count out the Broncos.

From today's Windsor Star http://www.canada.com/windsors tar/news/story.html?id=6e23141 4-a68b-45e8-bae7-22012b7cf4d8 :

Sports betting kicks off:
Today, casino taps into growing industry that focuses on fans

Don Lajoie, Windsor Star
Published: Friday, September 08, 2006

Casino Windsor is gambling the opening of its Legends sports lounge today should give it a competitive edge by offering "the new game in town" to a distinct clientele of sports bettors in Windsor and the U.S.

The high-tech "armchair fan's dream," which boasts 36 video displays and high resolution TV screens of various sizes, a media tower containing three, nine-foot projection screens and Canada's largest sports ticker -- at 119 feet in length -- is designed to cater to 170 sports fans at a time.

And the operative words here are sports fans. Chris Parrott, brand manager of lottery marketing for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC), said the self-proclaimed sports expert who plays the office football pool, likes to wager on a favourite team or pick the winners on Pro-Line, is the target customer.

He said sport fans represent a distinct demographic from the typical casino patron and it is that fan base, throughout Ontario, Michigan and Ohio, that the casino hopes to attract. The fact such gaming is not offered in the Detroit casinos gives Casino Windsor a unique marketing opportunity.

"This is a product built specifically for Windsor and Niagara," said Parrott. "It's not available anywhere else and the casino should profit from that."

Looking around the lounge at the walls of screens offering a dizzying array of games, the high-backed booths, the over-sized armchairs and sampling the menu featuring not only such stadium staples as burgers, fries and hotdogs but higher end offerings like steak sandwiches and shrimp salads, it's clear Legends has been designed as a destination attraction and not just another neighbourhood sports bar.

Gordon Orr, visitors and convention bureau general manager, said Legends is one component of the larger $400-million expansion, designed to reassert Casino Windsor's position in the area's crowded casino market.

'Sets us apart'

He said that with the annual number of visitors falling from 9.1 million in 1999 to just over five million, the timing is significant.

"We need something to set us apart," he said. "This will create some buzz. it will help, no question."

Orr said he was repeatedly asked about the possibility of sports betting coming to Casino Windsor while visiting a festival in Pontiac, Mich., last weekend.

So how does it work and how will it differ from Pro-Line games offered in Ontario?

Parrot said Legends will take wagers on NFL football, U.S. college football, pro hockey, Major League Baseball and basketball. Players select games like Casino Points Spread, Casino Props (propositions), Casino Odds or Casino Over/Under. On a single-game event, such as the Super Bowl, a player might be expected to pick three propositions.

He said the games will have higher wagering limits, unique odds and events, plus different redemption time lines than games offered at Ontario lottery outlets. He said the games would also offer an 85 per cent payout rather than the 65 per cent for Pro-Line. The maximum wager will be $200 rather than the $100 on Pro-Line. And players can redeem their winnings at the Lounge wicket within an hour of the final score.

"People will be able to come here, see the game, have a meal and place some bets to add some excitement," he said. "Then sit back in a beautiful lounge and await the results."

He said no budget has been set for the operation but it is expected to generate $3.5 million for Casino Windsor.
