Once again it looks like the local press, which are increasingly getting more and more pathetic, have ripped of another idea in its entirety from DetroitYES!: http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll /article?AID=2006609010406 My favorite line: "I gave up coming to Detroit; people pulled guns on you," said Sean Ronan, 60, of Brownstown Township, who was attending his first game last week in 22 years." PLEASE! Why does every article written by the local press on Detroit have to have at least one comment about some suburbanite being scared to go to Detroit. Has Mr. Ronan ever had a gun pulled on him in Detroit? Based on his quote it doesn't appear so. He's just going along with popular lore and perpetuating the rumors. The quote was absolutely unneeded. |

"He and Will walked around Michigan and Trumbull, snapped photos and took a small paint chip from the stadium wall as a souvenir." I wonder what else people take as souvenirs... I aloso ahte that people speak as a matter of fact about having a gun pulled on them in Detroit and they have NEVER been to Detroit or have never had anything done to them. |

Or maybe not a "slow news" day, but just business as usual now at the once great, once proud Detroit dailies. See this quote from a Free Press-er and commentary both taken from Jack Lessenberry's Metro Times column this week: From the Free Press staff person: "Folks in the newsroom are brain-dead. They don’t care. They lack any spark of innovation. Because only one person in this newsroom can have an idea that matters (not even his sidekick who came here last autumn with no daily newspaper experience in the past eight years), people sit dutifully slump-shouldered at their desks staring blankly at their computer monitors all day just trying to figure out what is expected. Everyone has finally understood what I observed from day one: Gannett felt they didn’t pick up anyone worth keeping here, and they’ve made it clear that they don’t value the ones who have stuck around. They replaced the previous metro editor (bad journalist, good manager) with a person from the News who’s both a bad journalist and a bad manager. They kicked the business editor out the door without a plan, then were turned down by six candidates who decided they couldn’t work here. Finally, they promoted [Paul] Anger’s henchman from Des Moines, who he’d brought here in the spring ... the current staff was largely made of strike-breakers from the ’90s, but they were at least motivated. Now they’re on autopilot." The theme of working without a plan is repeated often. Gannett had no plan for making money in Detroit. They thought the newsroom was fat and overstaffed, the advertising staff lazy and that they’d make their first-year numbers just by making cutbacks. Then they found out that Frank Vega had already raped the place in the ’90s. Wasn’t he a Gannettoid? How could they not know this? Ad revenues are horrible, and they cannot seem to keep those new presses busy in Sterling Heights because they haven’t been able to produce good quality. They’ve shaved another inch off the width of the printed page in the past week to save newsprint costs. These are just examples. It is worth stating again that both the Free Press and the News, its companion in what is now a totally Gannett-controlled partnership, are losing thousands of subscribers every month. |

Screw that guy and his misinformed attitude...yeah people pullings guns on me all day, right. On the other hand, to get a guy like that back in Detroit shows how powerful a pull that Tigers' games have. It is similar to how people who hadn't come to Detroit in years came down to the Super Bowl festivities. But our newspapers love to portray these wierdos in stories like this. I remember vividly the story about the guy who came downtown for the first time in years for the 2005 All Star game, but he wouldn't do it w/o carrying a concealed weapon. Perhaps the local newspapers just want people like us to laugh...but I think they just like to remind everyone of all the negativity that's still out there despite Detroit's improvement, and they do this by inserting irrelevant quotes like that one from that dude into a story which is otherwise positive. |

The Free Press is aiming toward suburbanites like they guy they quoted. Why would they write about the good stuff in Detroit when they don't care? Remember the name change? |

It's also funny that for years Windsorites have been going to Detroit without brandishing weapons to watch games. Are Windsorites tougher than their suburban Detroit counterparts? Or are they just crazy? |

<i>Once again it looks like the local press, which are increasingly getting more and more pathetic, have ripped of another idea in its entirety from DetroitYES!: Funny, the post on DetroitYes seems to be asking which park people like better. The story is not "entirely" about that at all. The nut graf is this: "It's an interesting coincidence: At the moment the new park has become filled with great vibes and good baseball, officials finally have gotten around to preparing the beloved old ballpark for demolition." With all of the topics posted here on the forums, the paper wouldn't be able to write anything if it had to check to make sure it wasn't discussed here first. Of course, I suppose the reporter COULD have seen the topic discussed here first and got the idea. I'm no mind-reader. |

Did anyone read this guy's entire quote?
quote:"I gave up coming to Detroit; people pulled guns on you," said Sean Ronan, 60, of Brownstown Township, who was attending his first game last week in 22 years. "Downtown is looking good. The stadium is absolutely mind-boggling. I liked Tiger Stadium, but you could get a seat behind a pole."
Seems to me the story is this guy used to have an unfairly negative perception of downtown Detroit but after coming down for a Tigers game, has changed his mind. What is the problem exactly. You idiots are jumping to the exact same kind of false conclusions that this guy once did. Pot meet kettle. Kettle this is pot. (Message edited by Jelk on September 02, 2006) |

The article is colder than a Detroit February. We miss Briggs Stadium and want her back for our own. jjaba doesn't like Comerica's orientation of homeplate, the skyline bullshit, nor the far away and open seating which makes rainy and sunny days difficult. Gimme back Sec. 24, Uppper Deck. Gimmie back the enclosed atmosphere and a walk through Corktown. Gimme back Father Kern, Ty Cobb, and those Mickey Mantle/Harmon Killebrew/ Reggie Jackson homers. Gimme back a real hot dog man with his steam case, forking dogs into steamed buns, and a tongue depressor swab of mustard. Gimme back the hard scrabble of Corktown and those Canadians waiting for the Tunnel bus across the Corner by the church. Gimme back the Michigan and the Trumbull streetcars in the middle of the brick streets. jjaba, now that's baseball. |

I agree, jjaba, CoPa is no Corner. It never will be. It's unfortunate and one more reason to hate Ilitch. |

What happened to the big announcement about Tiger Stadium be razed? Man, seven years since the last game there and all that property going to waste. Tear her down and get that damn Payless Shoes or whatever in there! (For the record, during the ten years I lived in Corktown on Bagley I proposed at CDC meetings and elsewhere that a mixed commercial-residential developement go in on the stadium site, something akin to downtown Birmingham with an historic tie in to Corktown.) |

It was announced months ago, it was front page news for days. Hell even the article above has an update on the TS demo
quote:Officials are cataloguing Tiger Stadium's seats and other artifacts in preparation for a sale to the public this fall. Details are still being worked out, but the sale could take the form of an auction, said Peter Zeiler, a City of Detroit development specialist involved in the planning for the stadium site's future. In June, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick announced the city would demolish the stadium this fall and build a ring of retail shops and housing surrounding the historic playing field, which will be preserved as a nonprofit park and baseball diamond. Zeiler said the public should get a chance to buy the artifacts in late October or early November The stadium likely won't be demolished until February or March at the earliest, Zeiler said.
