Should be interesting to see how now ex-Boeing Commercial Airplane president and CEO Alan Mulally does at Ford. Mulally has a good track record with Boeing, and it's generally held that he designed and led the resurgence of the commercial airplane end of Boeing after being battered a bit (and shaken off its top spot in commercial aircraft sales) by Airbus. This is BIG news out here in the Pacific NorthLeft. Boeing is to Seattle (and Washington state) what GM, Ford and Chrysler are to Detroit (and Michigan), so we're looking at Scott Carson (new President and CEO) and James Jamieson (new COO) in the same way you're looking at Mulally. |

I listened to the press conference. What BS. He was FIRED. Note also he is now the "Executive" Chairman. What the hell is that? Must be like "honorary" chairman. Who is the Chairman? I'll bet they won't let him use ink. |

As the head of an auto company Bill Ford didn't exactly impress but I will say one thing for the man, no crack heads are squatting inside a "security" fence on any of his properties. On a related note, I wonder who gets to nail Bill Ford's secretary now? Ford or the new guy. If it is the new guy, I hope he follows Ford's lead and moves his family out to Ann Arbor. The gossip about a thing like that in Grosse Pointe (or even Birmingham) can really take a toll on your family. (Message edited by Jelk on September 05, 2006) |

3rd world: "I'll bet they won't let him use ink." that is a great line! lol! Re the boeing exec ... hmmm not sure about the guy but boeing isn't even remotely the same sorta company as F ... unless this guy is some sorta singular talent, it seems an odd company to plumb for Auto exec talent. Boeing makes its serious $$ from huge gvt contracts for defense and intelligence applications they also make $ "selling" and supporting commercial airplanes to a small customer base of large corporations and countries. With the exception of fleet sales, today's domestic auto biz couldn't possibly be any different: getting United (or Egypt) to contract to boeing instead of airbus ain't even remotely the same as putting/keeping asses in Fusions/F150s instead of Camrys/Tundras. Boeing has no such thing as a dealer network. ... oh well ... good luck ... as 1953 mentioned, perhaps F will bring back the trimotor, lol! |

Bill Ford's letter to employees on new CEO Tuesday, September 05, 2006 From: Bill Ford Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 4:07 PM To: All Employees Subject: Leadership As I wrote in my employee letter last week, one of the three strategic priorities that I've been focusing on this year is Company leadership. While I knew that we were fortunate to have outstanding leaders driving our operations around the world, I also determined that our turnaround effort requires the additional skills of an executive who has led a major manufacturing enterprise through such challenges before. That's why I'm very pleased to tell you that Alan Mulally, who as CEO led a successful turnaround at the Commercial Airplane division at The Boeing Company, will become our president and CEO, effective immediately. Alan has deep experience in customer satisfaction, manufacturing, supplier relations and labor relations, all of which have applications to the challenges of Ford. He also has the personality and team-building skills that will help guide our company in the right direction. Alan is highly-regarded at Boeing and throughout industry. He is extremely well thought of in the Seattle area because he is an outstanding leader and a man of great character. While he is not from the automotive industry, he applied many of the lessons from Ford's success in developing the Taurus to Boeing's creation of the revolutionary Boeing 777 airliner. In the book, "Working Together," author James P. Lewis tells how the leadership principles Alan learned from Ford and honed at Boeing may be applied to other businesses. I expect Alan to be of great assistance to Mark Fields and the Way Forward team as they accelerate their business plan. After dealing with the troubles at Boeing in the post-9/11 world, Alan knows what it's like to have your back to the wall - and fight your way out with a well-conceived plan and great execution. He also knows how to deal with long product cycles, changing fuel prices and difficult decisions in a turnaround. Alan will also be extremely helpful to me as I evaluate our global strategic issues. Let me assure you: I'm not going anywhere. As Executive Chairman, I intend to remain extremely active in the direction of this Company. I'll be here every day and I will not rest until a prosperous future for this Company is secured. As I have said many times, I have been part of this Company since I was born and I will be a part of it for the rest of my life. I'm looking forward to an excellent working partnership with Alan and a quick integration into our leadership team. Please make Alan feel welcome and show him the best that Ford can be. That letter pretty much sums up the work Mulally did in pulling Boeing out of both the business threat of Airbus and the post 9/11 slump. Commercial is the BIG Boeing presence in Seattle, and there for a while they were sheading employees right and left. The work of his team helped pull the division up to where it was. It will be interesting to see 1) if he can do the same for Ford and b) will the family stay out of his way..... |

If he does move the World HQ, might it be hastened by the lack of mass transit? BTW, there is an Amtrak stop just a hop, skip, and jump from the World HQ. So Dearborn should be safe. |

All Bill Ford did was give up the Presidency and CEO of Ford. He's still the top gun as Chairman of the Board. He's now in exactly the same position that his late uncle Henry Ford II was, when HFII had others running the company. To assume that he and his family have somehow given up control over Ford is just not true. |

Bill Ford "fired"? I don't think so. Given how much Ford stock he has, he can never be "fired". I think what he has done is a face-saving tactic on his part. He knows that he is unable to really run the company. And that there are going to have to be even more job-cutting in the future. So he steps aside, still stays on the board, and still gets his millions from his Ford stock dividends, and will let the new guy, who is a KNOWN cost-cutter (which really means he is going to be firing people ) make all the changes that need to be made at Ford. Then in a few years the new guy can quit, so that he can spend more time with his family ( I always love that line ), and then Bill Ford can step back in. Just wait and see. And what is with "cost-cutting"? All these guys do is come in and cut costs by laying off people. So of course the costs go down!!!! What ever happened to developing viable business plans? Like making a really good car? If Ford would turn out some new, better quality product, people would buy. I am currently living in Bavaria, so I am speaking about the Ford models that are available here in Europe. Total crap. And not only are they crappy inside, they look crappy from the outside. |

itsjeff.... ....moving the HQ of Boeing was no big thing out here (although one did hear some grumblings, it was nothing major). Now, had they moved some manufacturing, THAT would be a big thing. That hasn't happened.... ....yet. |

Just like Gistok wrote- This is not much different when Henry II brought Ernest Breech in from Bendix. Back in the 40s. I give Bill Ford Jr. credit for realizing he was in over his head and went to find someone with a bit more experience in running a large company. I'm thinking the family will stay out of the way. They want the stock value to improve. |
