I got the email from Tessa that Karmic is closed for today and is changing management yet again. Supposed to reopen on Friday. |

I hope that this small business can turn it around. I've had several meals from there and all have been quite good. They never seem to be too busy though and I think that their prices are the reason. An entree and a drink can set you back $9.00 or pretty close to that amount. That's too steep for carry-out in Detroit. London, Paris, Tokyo, maybe not, but for Detroit, yes. They need to re-work their business model and get the price point a couple dollars lower. If that's not possible, there's no sense in re-opening. |

I agree. The food is good, but they need to offer more reasonable prices. I spent $11 on lunch and there didn't seem to be any way to go cheaper. If you can get our the door for $7/$8 and leave the higher priced options as well that would seem to work. Its more along the lines of the basement cafe at the cultural center across form the DIA and I think it would work much better. Also, why were there 4 people behind the counter? Seems like they were over employed. |

I haven't been back since the last management coup. The prices wouldn't seem as bad if the portions were a little larger. |

Yea prices are outrageous, but the idea is great. Hopefully better management will step in and create a viable option. |

I can't believe what I'm reading here...I really hope you people have taken these concerns directly to the business owner before spouting off, quite slanderously and libelously I might add, on a public forum. How dare you. |

Hey guys, I just got back from Karmic. the Chef has parted ways with the buisness for reasons I don't know. Myself Tessa and Joe were in there all day scrubbing the place. It is clean as a whistle and we will be open tommorow. I am going to try my best to make the stuff the Mike used to make. We employees are trying to build the buisness because we all need a job. I guess new management is coming but I don't know the ownerships plans for that or for us. As for the prices, they may seem high but they reflect what we pay for the organic food. So in a nutshell, we are open tommorow, we have everything in so the menu will be normal, and we are just going to what we can I guess. I know my restaraunts so it will be as good as it was. |

Those who want vegetarian/vegan food at an affordable price should go to The Good Well [Food Patch organic thing]. They have great sandiwches and soup & being that it's affordable enough for me... everyone else on the forum should be able to afford it. It's on Willis in between Avalon Bread, and the communist bookstore. So far this place has been great, and I'd like to see it do well. |

Chitaku, Is that why they closed way early on Wednesday [ABRUPT EDIT - I'm deleting things out of this post that I should not have typed here.] I really hope the place is successful. If only I was an experienced, skilled chef and the place could pay me $27K a year--I'd totally apply for the newly-emptied position. I like my bookkeeping job, but working in a vegan restaurant inside of an Art Deco masterpiece would be awwwsooommmeee.... --Paul (Message edited by Psewick on September 07, 2006) |

Solarflare, how is this slanderous or libelous in any way?? People are offering their opinions as to what they believe to be a fair price. Did I miss something where people were stating anything factual and horrible about the Karmic??? I see this thread as quite the opposite. People here WANT the Karmic to thrive. It's a great little restaurant that serves good food. You might disagree and think they're doing wonderfully well, the prices are fair, etc. but those would be your opinions as well- no different than the people who think that the portions could be a bit bigger for the amount they're paying. And to top it off Chitaku came in eloquently and quickly explianed the situation. Pure & simple. So I have no idea where anyone on this thread was even meanspirited in anyway. |

Yeah, I guess I take it a bit personal when someone starts throwing around terms like "slanderous & libelous" so casually. Them's some pretty heavy terms to be labelling folks. |

I've not been back since the $10 beans and rice episode. First it was dropping the celery and carrots from the peanut butter sandwich then the doubling of the price of the beans and rice. I would expect to pay more than Jimmy Johns to eat at Karmic, but something has to be done to make this more affordable to the average worker (I don't see this place as beiing a substitute for the Chuch Muers/Carl's clientele, so it should price itself competitively. Karmic has a great Keilbasa sandwich made with organic pigs and organic wonder bread. (just seeing if anyone ever reads my rants anymore) |

Ok the owner is not directly involved, he had a chef running the place but the chef has since parted ways. there is no real management change, we just felt that was a good way to put things. I don't know what more to say exept we keep the place clean now and I am exploring ways to have different price ranges. We have even implemented half orders for 4.99 which really are full orders in smaller boxes. |

My only beef (no pun intended) against the Karmic Cafe is that you really can't do one stop shopping. One has to go upstairs to order the juices, scamper back down to order the food and go back up and HOPE the juices are done to accompany the meal. It might be fine for carry-out but if one wants to dine in, it's tricky. It has nothing to do with the quality of the food or anything but it is a little bit of work to get it. |
