Am I on my own, or does anyone else think the selection of places to eat downtown for lunch could/should be upgraded significantly? Couldn't a place like chipotle do well there for lunch? I think that there is a nice weekday market if you put some better options. Au Bon Pain is always packed for lunch and its not even that great. At least the Detroit one isnt. What other lunch places could do well? |

Opening a Chipotle franchise is not an option. Their website indicates they are not interested in franchisees, I think all their stores are company owned. Not that it would hurt to write them a few letters about a CBD locale. It sure would make me happy. |

I didnt say anything about maturity, i was talking about productivity. They are not one in the same by any means. Yes it was immature, sorry if I offended you susanarosa. And yea steve just change the name. Sounds great lets just not have any semi decent places to eat at all because you are afraid of chain restaurants. Maybe if there werent five places to eat from independent owners we wouldnt be having this conversaton. |

Deandub, you have to understand that today is Macho's first day on the new job, and he has some pretty big shoes to fill. Merchantgander's mean-spirited, hate-filled remarks somehow brought joy to all who read them. He made being a shrill harpie look easy. Give Macho time to grow into the role of Forum Wiseass. Sorry Rj you are late on that one. Macho already said it and it wasnt funny the first time. And yes Muchris I know of all those places, and I guess you are right there are a nice amount of places. Deetroit obviously isnt New York or Chicago and maybe im asking too much to get places to eat in Deetroit up to that caliber. Not saying all those places in/around the CBD are bad, I just think there is a lot of room for improvement. Thanks for all the information. |

I think it's ridiculous that there are two Jimmy John's and three Thai restaurants but little else downtown. One place that is great that I didn't see mentioned is Vicente's on Library, near the um, well, library. Great Cuban food, which I had never had before. I like Sizzle 'n Spice a lot. Good buffet and the owner is a nice guy. Really good chicken masala. Sweetwater Tavern on Brush near the main Jacoby's is all right. And of course, there's always Jacoby's itself. |

and by little else i mean variety, not the number of restaurants. Also, don't forget the Anchor Bar on Fort, just past the Penobscot, for all the greasy bar food you can eat. Great turkey reubens there. |

Luxe Cuisine on Congress, has the best quality chef-made food served cafeteria style that you could want. There's nothing like it in the 'burbs. The cafe in the Guardian building has great sandwiches and soup, and there's that organic place in the Guardian now too... |

I like Mike's Pita at Eastern Market in the bright yellow building. Cheap, good, fast. Many special for $5 include a pop. For a little more I get the Greek Salad with grilled chicken. About 20 seats but a lot of people pick up carry out. Seems to be quite a few Ford Field and Comerica Park people there. Plenty of free parking during the week if you have to drive there. |

Chipotle blows. May I recommend a couple places for those looking to open a franchise? http://www.thecounterburger.co m/franchising.shtml Just opened one here in Palo Alto. Damn, that was a tasty burger. Good price too, even here! And the other place is http://www.pitapitusa.com/Fran chising/ Fun little places. Plus it is a Coeur d'Alene company (my hometown), so I must put the word out ;) Let me know if anyone opens one, and I'll be sure to come by for a bite! |

Downtown Detroit has at least 100 places to go for lunch, with a wide variety of styles and prices. Downtown Detroit is a little different than what most people are used to. Most of our restaurants are scattered around downtown, and not all bunched up along a few streets. Don't assume that there is a huge lack of options just because you don't see them all lined up in a row. Downtown Detroit is filled with hidden gems that are overlooked by most people. If you are having trouble finding good lunch spots, please post what you are looking for, and you will get turned on to some new places that you never even considered. For example, I recently heard a guy complaining about the lack of pizza places downtown. You will not find many obvious pizza places during a quick drive around downtown, but they do exist. There is no downtown Pizza Hut or Dominoes, but you will find Little Caesars and Bellacinos located inside the Millender Center and 1001 Woodward. The Detroit Pizza Factory, Pizzapopolis, and Nikkis are a few of the obvious downtown pizza places, but most people never think about getting pizza from the Detroit Beer Co, Buzz Bar, or Pappy's. You will find some of the best food in unusual downtown spots. Try the fried chicken at Bunchy's. Try the "Mess-Around" deli sandwich at Happy Cream. Try the quesadillas at the Detroit Beer Co. Try the pizza at the Buzz Bar. Downtown Detroit is filled with local shops selling good food at reasonable prices. All you have to do is look around a little and be willing to try new things. |

Let's not kid ourselves, the "dazzling array" of CBD lunchtime dining spots is in fact disappointing as well as, in many cases, exceedingly mediocre, with a healthy dollop of sub-par service for seasoning. That said, however, a hearty "huzzah" for Luxe Cuisine in the Marquette Building...I assume it is still in business. They always did a great job with inventive and inexpensive, albeit assembly line,food..... |

Attention machoken fans:
quote:today is Macho's first day on the new job, and he has some pretty big shoes to fill.
Looks like I need to clarify. On that other forum, Putski said:
quote:The "loss" of Merchantgander leaves the teethkicking torch to be carried by Erikd, machoken and Ndavies.
Now, I took that as an acknowledgement that I already participate in a fair amount of 'teethkicking' in my own right. When I said I would carry on, I meant that I would continue my pattern of sarcastic remarks, some more crass than others. I was not trying to imply that I would be filling merchantgander's shoes. I don't want to try to fill his shoes, I would probably fail in that endeavour. Although, if my remarks grow to resemble merchantgander's (or at least are perceived to grow to resemble), I'm not going to complain. Fortunately I'm in a better mood today, the sarcasm in my posts probably won't be as crude as yesterday. Did I just overshare? |

Mac's on Third is open, still serving the same crappy food with dismal service. I was forced to go there for a colleague's going away party and the barmaids sat around talking to each other and listening to the satellite radio '80s channel. Good times! When it was the Golden Galleon, they had some decent food. The food choices downtown are better than any suburb. |

ErikD is right, our lunch places are scattered. In many cases you have to be a local to know where they are. Luxe Cuisine does not have an "outside" door, you have to enter the Marquette building's (is that it?) main entrance to get there. They do have a sign outside though... Another good lunch option: The Buzz Bar. It's got a pizza/salad deal at lunch, for a very low set price (5.95 I'm thinking) you get all you can eat salad, but also a selection of different sorts of pizza, again all you can eat, none Domino-ish, all good. The good thing too is that it's all ready, no waiting. They bring new pizzas out of various kinds every few minutes... |

I hear a lot of complaining so I assume you're not on your own. But, I also know that when I worked in midtown Manhattan people complained about the lunch choices also. Perhaps it's just that people expect too much. Large portions and high quality for a low price all within 1 block of their office is unrealistic, but that seems to be what is expected. |
