Having seen one too many threads about what neighborhood is safest or most dangerous, I recalled the Detroit News story of 2004 that was mightily discussed on this forum (https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/messages/23585/25970.html) and thought, this is a job for Google Earth. So, here's a .KML file that you can open in Google Earth to visualize where gunplay was and wasn't happening in Detroit at that time. It covers 755 shootings reported in 665 incidents. Caveats: As the Detroit News story said, the Web page seems to have come straight from the police blotter, so some of the data is suspect. I corrected about 50 spelling errors (correctly, I hope), and I had to toss 35 entries because the address was unintelligible or unknown, or had no block number. This may account for why the most depopulated parts of the city (such as MLK Blvd.) seem to have had fewer shootings than you'd expect, but clearly, the most dangerous places in the City are the places where the residential blocks are intact. I apologize to anyone who sees this as lurid, negative, or rehashing old news. I post this only as a media service and to answer those on the forum who seem to want this info. Unarmed in Ottawa. |

wow, that's really sad. I didn't realize how many shootings there were. When I first saw the map I was relieved to see the big band of no shootings in the middle of the city, but then I realized that there weren't any markers there because it's not in the actual city of Detroit. Areas that I'm more familiar with have relativly less shootings, but still too many, and more than I thought. There's even shootings in the real nice parts of town too. Can someone post the crime stats from 04 and now? I don't remember if crime has increased or decreased since then. |

Interesting stuff, thanks. Not sure exactly what to deduce or conclude on the mapping based on it only being for a 6-month period 2 years ago and also that there are dots seemingly everywhere. Personally, glad to see the area near Palmer Park/DGC/UDM/UD High to be relatively shooting free. |

I'd like to see some other city stats (D.C., Atlanta, Dallas...) to put these into perspective. 755 shootings is just not tolerable, though, regardless of how it matches up. Not in the self-proclaimed "Greatest Country in the World." Seriously, I don't see why anyone tolerates this. |

A guy in Ypsilanti does a weekly crime report with maps using Google Maps. Of course crime stats are relatively easy to get in Ypsi, but theoretically a similar project could be undertaken in Detroit. http://www.ypsicrime.org/ |

If you assume that there are 900K people in Detroit, and then half of these are men and of all men, 1/4 are between the ages of 18 and 30, then there are about 100K men in Detroit between the ages of 18 and 30. Now, if you further assume that since 2003 most of the shootings are in that group, you come up with a casulty rate of 2500 per 100000. What's amazing is that we've got 200,000 men in Iraq with 18,000 casulties over the same time period, or a casulty rate of 9000 per 100,000. So, unless my math is wrong, the casultry rate in civilian Detroit is about 1/3 of the combat casulty rate in wartime Iraq. Please, somebody tell me I'm wrong. |

well, to begin with not everyone killed is from the city, and there have not been 2500 murders since 2003... |
