The Rev. Milton Henry, a legendary civil rights attorney, minister and black separatist who also served in Pontiac city government, has died of natural causes. He was 87.

Old Pontiac families will remember Milton Henry. His part in the "Back to Africa" movement in early 1960's was beyond "controversial" in middle-class Pontiac. It was unthinkable.

The obit doesn't mention it, but I'm sure he was pastor of the Presbyterian church on Lafayette at Chene until his retirement years ago.

I got to know him professionally about 20 years ago. The revolutionary who drove my grandfather and his generation in a lather had mellowed. To me he was always pleasant, courteous and sharp. I saw him about a month ago and he looked well. You certainly would have never guessed that he was 87.

The Free Press mentions his work at St. John's Presbyterian.

My grandmother attends Christ Presbyterian and always spoke very highly of Rev. Henry.
