Jerome, It was weather related because some drivers think their invincible and drive carelessly when its raining very hard or the roads are slippery. It could of been avoided if people just would have been driving the way they were suppose to. Its like when people drive fast on highways in Foggy conditions. I blame the drivers 60%. Only 60% becuase they're could have been some nickel sized hail within the storms like my side of town saw. |

It was inevitable with the way people drive during the rush hour. 3:30 is about when the type-As rush out of the office the fastest to avoid the 5 o'clockers...yet the mini-van soccer parents are not quite off the road from school pickup yet. It has been a very ugly week for accidents...I stay out of the rush and listen to the road reports. At least at that intersection they have traffic cams, right? Perhaps they can review the video and see what happened. |

Like this is a surprise anywhere along I696 or I275? The real surprise is that it doesn't happen more often. Those roads have just gotten too fast. |

at the same time, imagine what traffic would be like if people followed the rule-of-thumb that one car length should be allowed between vehicles for every ten miles-per-hour of speed. sometimes, weather throws some freaky stuff at motorists, with no warning, confounding even the most cautious of drivers. |

A little bit after 3:00 I was on 696 heading west when the rain came down so hard I ended up exiting the freeway a few miles east of Drake because I could barely see the road. I slowed down and safely pulled over so I could exit, but there were cars that were flying by me at a high speed considering how bad the weather conditions were. Channel 7's website had some nice streaming video from their chopper this afternoon of the incident. It still amazes me to sit here in sunny suburban Las Vegas and watch Detroit TV. And Robbie Timmons is still a cutie despite the marching years! |

They've PROVEN that leaving a cushion ELIMINATES the stop-n-go crunching that happens periodically behind trouble spots. It is actually a series of natural harmonics that you can see occur if you look far enough forward in the line of cars. I once exactly called a really bad rear-end collision in the center lane on northbound Southfield Fwy while driving a friend home in the speed lane from the UofM-D...saw the decreasing distances ahead of us in poor response to someone jamming on their brakes...and said, 'there will be an accident...,wait...,right...he re!' while I pointed at the cars directly next to us. Lane changers are the worst, because they effectively tie up TWO car spaces with each lane change. Read a very interesting piece in LA magazine when I lived there. They have the most comprehensive analysis of traffic anywhere on the earth...something like 8 gigs of data daily from all the in-road sensors. And EVERYONE knows how bad LA traffic on the highway can be...crazy how ONE sorry person changing a tire could throw off FIVE miles of freeway...those fools just drink up anyone's misfortune with their rubber-necking. |

A friend was involved in that crash yesterday. She apparently was the first accident that started everything. She drives a Taurus and was driving down 696 when it started raining cats and dogs and then some. She slowed down for obvious reasons when a semi-truck behind her didn't slow down. He slammed on the brakes way too late, plowed right into her and then jack-knifed across the whole highway. Luckily she walked away with just scrapes and bruises. The car is completely totaled and the cops said they were amazed that she walked away from a wreck like that. It's been mentioned on other threads: what are these truckers doing these days? |

Well, that's not the story the WOMAN driver of the truck said. |

Roads should be faster still! In fact, they should be light rail trains! |

Cheers for the hero in the truck that ditched - she saw the accident and knew her vehicle would kill multiple people. She risked her own life and trashed her rig and load by driving straight into the ditch. That takes more than courage. |

I was listening to sirius enjoying my ride home. Ahead of me I noticed the brake lights. I switched to local radio and they said if you are traveling on 696W get off at Telegraph. Well too late for me. I was 1 1/2 miles away from Orchard Lake Road. I was stopped at 3:38 pm and didn't get off at Orchard Lake Road till 5:00 pm Ugh!! |
