Hey, I've always wondered (though now it'd be a much bigger deal for obvious reasons) is their any map showing approximately what parts of the city the salt mines go under? I've always heard how large the operation is, but don't have any scope of really how extensive it is. |

SW Detroit west of the Rouge and parts of Allen Park and Lincoln Park. Detroit's mine, being off the rivers makes it less cost effective to ship. So, Windsor or Cleveland's salt is cheaper and more profitable. There is salt all the way from Detroit to Cleveland and a bit beyond, BTW, as a result of the Michigan geologic basin, when Michigan was the bottom of a sea. The mine isn't really that big. |

Any recent pictures from the salt mines? Have any of you urban explorers gone in there? |

This is a photo I found at the LOC of the Delray Salt Co from about 100 years ago. I took a tour of the salt mine about 1980, they were only open a short time, and stopped for liability issues. I don't recall taking photos during it, maybe we weren't allowed to. I'll have to check if I have any other info filed away somewhere. |

Years back the spousal-unit and I won dinner in one of the mines from a radio station (WOMC??). The mine was apparetnly closing to being converted to waste storage and they wanted to send it out with a bang. Dinner was WAY COOL and they took us on a mini tour in the rail cars they used to transport stuff down there. I even collected a couple of salt chunks that I've coated to preserve them. Only thing I didn't like was the elevator ride down and back up again. Elevator was very old and rickety, very dark, and the ride took a VERY long time. |

Thanks, Rustic. And special thanks to Mike for that great, detailed map. I'd always figured they were actually under much more of Detroit proper. |
