I just leafed through the Arcadia book on the Sanders company - VERY INTERESTING ! During the Motown Complex demolition not much was figured out about the shorter "Sanders" building. According to this book it was in fact built by Fred Sanders and housed the store on the main floor and the Sanders factory on the top three floors. They needed more space so they added the extra floors later ! It was referred to as the "Henry Street Factory". Lots of mint photos of the facade with its original cornice in place. Goes through all the suburban versions of Sanders stores, and also the Highland Park office and factory. (the old one and the big modern one.) Didnt know there was a Sanders in the Broderick ! Very cool book, definitely check it out if you havent yet. |

Was this ever the headquarters for Sanders, just wondering, or was it just one of there many stores and factories? |

In its time, the henry street factory was the headquarters and factory. the store was called "the woodward store" but was not the "main" store. The main store would be the one in merchants row across from Hudsons or the later one in Campus Martius. (moved back to the spot across from hudsons, thats the one that was just demolished) |

What about the Sanders Factory on Hamilton (?) in Highland Park. How does that fit in? Livedog2 |

Do they show the jjaba Sanders, Fenkell and Wyoming, on the NW side? Pewter drink cups with paper inserts, hot fudge puffs, great boxes of cnady, and waitresses with starched uniforms. Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance forever and a day... The store was torn out for the gas station on the NW corner. This is way before the Lodge expressway started there, heading East towards downtown. jjaba, Westsider. |

Weren't the Sanders terra cotta (or some other material?) colorful panels removed from the Sanders building prior to Motown/Sanders demolition, and donated to the DIA? IIRC, weren't they Louis Comfort Tiffany panels?? (Message edited by Gistok on September 16, 2006) |

Yeah, the Louis Comfort Tiffany was reclaimed by DIA, but not until a couple days after they started. This resulted in a bit of damage. DIA came back in a panic when they realised what it was, and said that they needed every single square of glass. It was all over the sidewalk and swept up in a pile on the side. The book has pics of the LCTiffany Deco lotus mosaics intact. Breathtaking. The Highland Park factory is on Oakman Boulevard down the street from the Hostess Factory and the Yellow Pages phone exchange building discussed in the "landmarks" thread. That came after they outgrew the Henry Street factory. There is a small old factory on the right, and then they sprawling newer factory on the left. They have a wonderful aerial shot of those. Now its on Hall Road (M59) in Clinton Township - the Morley factory. |

Heres the "Sanders" sign One of the amazing loutus designs Herse what the inside looked like just before demolition. Note what looks like an old conveyer belt machine against the wall. Heres the original Oakman Boulevard factory Heres the Sanders signage that was in front of the old Okaman Blv factory Heres the modern Oakman Boulevard factory. This is where Sanders made its last stand before being bought by Morleys. |

I went to Amazon to find the book but they didn't have a listing for an Arcadia book about Sanders. What's the name of it? Livedog2 |

I wouldn't mind if a Sanders went back in in the Broderick Tower.... or Campus Martius for that matter |
