I get this from some of my out-of-town friends. Now, of course, parking location depends on what you want to do, and it changes depending on whether or not there is a particular event happening. But in general, if someone asks a question like this, what do you tell them?

umm, finding parking downtown is pretty darn easy thesedays. The Compuware Garage is right near Campus Martius, is $5 on weekends and weeknights, well lit and has a DPD parking office in the garage itself. So if safety is the problem, it doesnt get any better than Compuware...

Tough question, there are so few options for parking in this city.

Tell them to open their eyes and they'll find parking in a matter of minutes.

If you park at a surface lot, be sure it's attractively landscaped and lighted.

best idea ever....park in the Greektown casino garage, then get your parking validated. You can just walk into the casino and they will validate it, just pretend like ur a gambler

Nice car or crappy car? I have both, with the nice one I 'll park at the Comerica park surface lot, Opera house garage or one of those like that. With my old rusty Dodge truck, I'll stuff that anywhere, just gotta make sure there's nothing left out in the open that looks of value.

I'm planning on taking the Megabus service to Chicago next month. Is it possible to park a car for several days? I've never encountered that so I don't know how it works. Does it get towed or ticketed if its left in the GCP or Foxtown garage for too long? When I leave do they charge me a whole day's fare for however many days it has been in there? Thanks.

Consider taking a DDOT or Smart bus to the Megabus stop.

I never pay to park downtown. I refuse to. I have a nice car, and am not afraid to park it on the street. I’ve parked on the street for 5 years and have never had a problem.

I’m sure it helps that I have a manual transmission, and I also make sure there's nothing of value visible to any passer-by’s that would tempt anyone to break a window.

FHO, Grand Circus Park Garage is obviously right across the street. I would park in the Opera House garage for the few days or a week that you want to stay. They have no problem however long you would like to stay. I believe it is $5 per day.....alot better than the $25-35 per day you would spend in downtown Chicago.

My "secret" parking place is the Millender Center.

Biggest reason is the People Mover stop. Just park on level 5 and walk out the doors. Easy access to most of what you would want to be near downtown, and not much traffic when you want to leave. Not sure how much long term would be, but the Megabus stop is right at the Whitney Building PM stop.

Ok ok hahaha. I'd park in Opera House...central to alot of things. Easy in, easy out (via 375-Madison connector)

I'd double check rates before parking over several days at the Opera House; if you return during an event at the Opera House, Comerica, or Ford Field, you may get hit with a higher rate (though less than Chicago)

Megabus has a stop at Cass and Warren as well. It is right in front of La Pita/Barnes and Noble (wayne state). You can park in anywhere around around there including the WSU garage. It picks up after the downtown stop but on the way home drops you off first.

Thanks for all the tips. I didn't know if any of those parking structures would have a problem with a car that was in there for days. And I wasn't sure if I could get on the bus at the WSU stop since the website only shows Grand Circus Park in the ticket search results.

Yeah the Atwater is a good spot, but I never had a problem parking on the street.
