Bulk collection is returning to Detroit - four times a year.

Beginning Oct. 1, the city will reinstate bulk collection, which was a controversial topic when Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick ended the practice in January.

City residents will soon receive brochures detailing collection specifics. Pickup dates will vary by neighborhood.

Under the new plan, residents can places up to one cubic yard of bulk, approximately the size of a refrigerator, in front of their home. Bulk items more than one cubic yard or weighing more than 1,000 pounds will not be collected, according to a city press release.

Finally. This is good news, though.

The press release I received in an email also mentioned that yard waste will be collected on a weekly basis from May to December, which is actually an improvement over the old bulk pickup. (Hopefully this info will be posted soon on the city website...)
