I have a question for the forum. I was recently informed by a friend that the David Whitney building is open to urban explorers, not that this is new information. The thing that is troublesome is that I was told that the access to the building is so obvious that anyone can get in and apparently is. It seems that there where many people in the upper floors of the building last night, screaming, pounding and throwing stuff. I recall seeing some pictures of the interior from several months ago and the building appeared to be in good condition, however it appears to be getting trashed quickly.

Is there any way to contact the owners of the building or the city so it can be properly secured before it is damaged beyond repair?

You can find the owner's contact info in this thread from UrbanPlanet.org

Someone needs to call "Ruth to the Rescue". Maybe WDIV can get the building secured.

Maybe people need to be respectful of other people's property (OPP) and stay out.

Yeah, like that's ever going to happen.

If it can't be restored or used then it should be demolished.

Who knows what are some of the major structural set-backs that might keep the DW from being renovated? I know that the rooms aren't very wide from windows to the inner hallways because of the buildings configuration.

Royce-- The Book-Cadillac had the same problem of too-small rooms, but that's all being remedied. The DW could probably similarly be gutted down to the columns and exterior walls (at great expense, of course).

The problem with the hallways could be fixed by putting them along the light court. Otherwise the building in probably in the best shape of any abandoned building downtown.

The bigger issue for it is parking, the Kales has that half of the Grand Circus garage tied up. It seems they really only have two options, build a garage and share with the owner of surface lots at Clifford. Or if Quicken does relocate to the Statler site, hopefully they'll build enough parking for both buildings.

The Grand Circus Park Parking Garage is under utilized as it is. There are about 900 spaces for parking. I am not sure how many the Kales has but I don't not think it is more than 200. The Broderick Tower has requested about 1.5 spaces per unit so there is plenty of spaces for the DW. Assume 200 for the Broderick and 200 for the Kales, that leaves 500 spaces. Plenty to go around for the whole park.

There are plenty of parking spaces in GCP garage. The west side bottom floor, where the Kales people park is usually about 1/2 full at most. There is a floor above that is never full except for football and baseball games. And an entire East Side that is even bigger.

As is the case with most of the city, there is plenty of parking.
