Suppost was going to go where Madisons on Broadway currently is. Last I heard it was a dead deal. |

A residential tower wouldn't be a bad idea. But my preference would be a new Observatory. Something like this http://www.chara.gsu.edu/CHARA /MtW/60inVisitorInfo.html We could link it to the Detroit Science Center. I'm not sure how, but somehting that wouldn't require walking or taking a car (maybe some sort of tram). |

I would rather put an addition to the science center for the observatory, but it doesn't sound right to put one in the middle of the downtown area. Plus to many lights. (Message edited by motownman on September 26, 2006) |

I think it would look great right in the middle of all those buildings. It would really fill in the space, and I think it would be a step in the right direction to diversify our economy. |

But wouldn't it make more sense to put one in an open area rather then in the middle of skyscrapers. |

You'd put an observatory one of the city's prime development parcels? Yeah, that should be a draw downtown forget about things like offices, hotels, retail. Can we at least, please, keep wishes in the realm of reality? |

Astronomical observatories aren't built in cities because of light pollution. It's far more efficient to build them in remote locations or in space and beam the data into cities. (Message edited by Jimaz on September 26, 2006) |

You mean the Hudson Block? Every single block on Woodward could be called the "Woodward Block." |

Yes, this is the old Hudson Block, but the name of the block as part of the Campus Martius zone is "Woodward Block." BTW, someone JUST posted a thread asking for updates not even 3 days ago, I think it was. |

I agree with Sharmal, An observatory would be perfect on the Woodward Block. Sticking with the outerspace theme we should build a launch pad on the Monroe block. Move over Cape Canaveral and Houston, Detroit could be the new-space tourist capital. |

Wow, Good thinking Wmuchris. Maybe we could take the "Airport City" model and turn Detroit into a Spaceport. Tourists could spend money in our city while they wait for Liftoff! (Message edited by sharmaal on September 26, 2006) |

Well, if there's a launch pad then the take off would kill off pedestrain traffic, figurativly and literaly. Space elevators are safer, and I hear they're more economical. Plus, you could put an observatory near the top of it. |

You could avoid the light pollution if you constructed a tower of about 1,600 feet... smog and fog and low-lying coulds that reflect the most light usually lie below that level. THe observatory could go on top. |

And there could be a really really expensive cafe at the top. And the sandwiches would be held together with little space elevator toothpicks. |

Oh honey, they're already building a spaceport. But it's in New Mexico. My friend is the lead architect. http://www.virgingalactic.com Once again, too late to the table for Detroit. I agree this would have been a great development opportunity for the city!!! |

How about painting a big mural of some vague multicultural nature on Merchant's Row? We should leave the site open so people can wander around the top of the Premier garage enjoying it. Sure, they won't have jobs or places to live, but everyone can feel good about it. |

Not bad, that's an area of the city that needs to increse it's density. I could forgo a downtown location to spur development out there. I'm sure it would increase the demand for restaurants. Maybe something like a Sesfood place where you pick out your fish and they prepare it for you>? |

No I think that the spaceport should go on top of the RenCen. Perfect! While there at it add some permanent spotlights. LOL! We have a nine year old in the building. |

The Rencen would be a better spot for the space port. They could then send the incoming aliens through tunnel customs facility. A nine year old with no sense of humor. |

I'm ok with having the launch pad on the Monroe Block as long as there is street level retail. That part of downtown could use a good coney island. |

The primary problem I have the the observatory is that light pollution would diffuse it's effectiveness. As someone who took astrophysics at Wayne, I can vouch that celesital observing in the city is terrible and support planner 727. Between the Trees, Big Buildings, and Lighting, there is a lot that stands between you and the sky. Best leave these things for places like North Dakota. I do like the idea of bringing something really unique to the site, so I commend the suggestor for being ouot of the box. |
