If anyone is curious this for all cities with over 750K: Detroit actually has a pretty solid police presence compared to other cities. Of course given the crime here it makes sense. Chicago, Philly and NY are the only cities with more officers per resident than Detroit: City Citizens per officer Chicago 216.59 Philadelphia 221.96 New York 226.09 Detroit3 270.79 San Francisco 341.62 Columbus 407.55 Los Angeles3 413.80 Dallas 414.24 Houston 428.07 Honolulu 453.13 Indianapolis 499.25 Phoenix 505.97 Jacksonville 507.83 San Diego 614.56 Las Vegas Metro 624.30 San Antonio 636.25 San Jose 674.97 Some cities have a large number of civilians in law enforcement. Here is the same comparison taking all officers and civilian law enforcement. City Citizens per officer New York 153.03 Philadelphia 196.36 Chicago 198.96 Detroit3 243.82 Indianapolis 284.50 Jacksonville 289.61 San Francisco 293.45 Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department 297.38 Los Angeles3 311.68 Houston 339.43 Columbus 341.91 Dallas 349.72 Honolulu 366.93 Phoenix 387.70 San Diego 450.64 San Antonio 506.28 San Jose 530.92 So my question is - How do you seemingly see so many more police officers in other cities than in Detroit? Too much staff and not enough officers on the street? Too much traffic patrol? What? |

Put as many officers out there as you want, it won't do a thing to combat crime. The city needs jobs. Give the people jobs and everything else will fall into place, including our crime problem. |

I agree with Jt1 though, in most all other large cities I have been to, there is a distinctly more visible police presence. Part of the issue may be that the while the number of police per citizen in Detroit may seem high, the number per area (sq.mile) is not. Chicago, for example: about 2.8MM people over 228 sq.mi, which is a density of about 12,700 people/sq.mi. Detroit: about 951K over 138 sq.mi, a density of about 6,890 people/sq.mi. So even if our cops/citizen was the same, you'd see (& have) roughly half the number of cops. Another way to look at it, even though Chicago has fewer police per person, they have a greater number of cops per sq/mile. Chicago= 63.8 cops/sq.mile Detroit= 28.2 cops/sq.mile One of the many benefits of DENSITY. |

RRL: But Chicago is also three or four times more dense than Detroit is in terms of population. I don't get it, if Chicago had 120 cops a square mile that would be something, but double? You also have to factor in areas where little crime happens: places for instance like Lake Calumet, Rouge Park, or even the Jefferson Plant take up an enourmous amount of room but generate little crime. Number of cops per anything means little if the cops are all sitting in the donut shops. |

Chow, do you really think that putting officers out does not affect crime? Logically that makes zero sense. If someone is about to commit a crime and a cop is suddenly present, or if they plan some sort of crime (b&e)and a cop is present.........guess what.......THEY AINT GONNA COMMIT THAT CRIME. Show me any evdidence at all that jobs prevent crime.I don't think you can. It is a myth. Crime causes poverty. As for the # of cops on the street in Detroit I don't know the breakdown.I do know that crime continues to be the biggest hindrance to Detroits revival. |

I'll take the bait.. Crime causes poverty, eh? So if the area isn't impoverished, why are they commiting crime? And I would think that employment has some sort of hand in preventing crime. Work anything close to a LEGIT (where legit means not commiting crimes as a means to make income) full-time job and guess what, that's 30-40 hours a week that you aren't out on the streets robbing, B&E'ing, car-jacking, assaulting, etc. |

Crime caused by ideas, interesting. I guess that means we should have more Thought Police patrolling around Detroit then. |

Here is a police stat I'd like to see: number of cops busted for DUI in the last ten years. I'm guessing it would be a very short list. I've got four cops in my family by marriage. Their motto is, cops don't let cops get busted for drunk driving. |

Having the jobs available does not mean that the unemployed will take those jobs! There are a lot of people who simply do not want to work, it interferes with their day. My Dad was a cop and I have a daughter who is a cop so I too am familar with what they have to put up with. |
